Chapter 30

It's been one week since the "break." I feel liberated now that I'm not with Harry anymore, but deep down inside, I miss him. But I can't. Harry was the first man I've really loved. Maybe all it takes is time.

I have to go back to the hospital today so the doctors can look at the break in my leg. I put on a super baggy sweatshirt and some shorts, despite it being so cold outside. My blonde hair is thrown up into a low bun and I put on some makeup.

My mother helps me down the stairs and leads me into the car and we are on our way.

"So, are you and Harry on good terms now?" My mom asked.

"Yeah, I guess. I haven't talked to him since last week."

"I'm glad that you are putting yourself first. Now, you can focus on your life and your work. Just imagine the opportunities that will be coming your way."

I put my head into the window and sighed. "I guess so," I said.

"I've gotten e-mail after e-mail about what's going on with you two. I think you should think about doing some interviews and get yourself out there a little bit."

"Mom, do you really think that is a good idea?"

"Of course it is! You'll be the next big thing!"

I sighed. She doesn't get it. "One interview," I said, "and that's it."

We get to the hospital. My mom helps me out of the car and gets my crutches. Then, we walk into the hospital.

"You look nervous," my mother says.

"It's because I am."

"You afraid of the doctors?"

"No, I'm afraid of being out in public," I said raising my eyebrows.

My mom and I go check myself in. The receptionist freaked when she found out I was "the Alex Hanlon." Trust me hunny, it's not worth freaking out about.

We sit down and grab some magazines. My mom immediately rips it out of my hand. "You're not reading these," she said.

"Well, why not?"

"Because you're practically on every page. And I don't want you-" I interrupt her by grabbing the magazine out of her hand and let out a sigh. I turn to a random page and I immediately see my face as well as Harry's. Shit. "Okay, fine have it back."

The doctor checks out my leg and sends me home. I still have to wear this cast for another 4 weeks or so, unfortunately.

We get home and my mother helps me get into my room. As soon as she does that, the doorbell rings. Mom rushed downstairs to answer it. I hear people talking, but I can't make out what they are saying. I hear footsteps come up the stairs. "Hello?" I hear a girl say. She comes to the door.

"Hi Tory." I say with confusion.

"Hey, I have all of your stuff that you left at our house. Harry also wants me to get all the stuff that he left here," Tory explained.

"Oh, uhm, all his stuff is on that chair over there. Just take it."

Man, I was not expecting this. And the fact that he couldn't even come here himself and drop off my stuff as well as get his is pretty pathetic. I should of known.

"You know, Harry is still super upset about the whole break-up thing," Tory said. This is gonna get awkward real fast.

"I bet he is. I am too, you know?"

"How can you know? You're the one who broke up with him! You obviously didn't love him as much as he loves you."

"Tory, you don't understand, it's much more complicated than you think."

"But is it really? My big brother is gonna leave next month for almost a year. A year. What are you gonna do when he's gone, huh?"

I feel extremely attacked. "Tory, I just need some time for myself, some time to think about life and-"

Tory began to cry. She covered up her eyes and sat on my bed. My first instinct was to sit next to her and just hug her. So, that's exactly what I did. Tears slowly rolled down my face. Tory didn't even flinch or resist my hug, instead, she hugged me right back.

I began to have flashbacks when Billy, Tory's dad, keyed her face and beat her to the ground.

We hid in a secret place that only Harry and Tory knew in this little closet.

"I got to go teach dad a lesson," Harry said and left me with Tory. I kissed his cheek. I held Tory close knowing how scared she is right now.

"Am I going to die?" Tory asked. Her little weak British accent brought more tears to my eyes.

"No sweetie, I promise. I will keep you safe."

 "I can't have my brother leave," Tory said between sobs. "He's my protector. Who's gonna protect me now?"

Tory started to cry into my shoulders. She is still traumatized by this whole thing still.

Now, I see what this is all about. She's scared, almost terrified. Harry is practically a "father figure" to her. Harry is all she has.

"Here, Tory, how about I clean you up?" I said.

Tory filled up the tub with hot water. She refused to take her clothes off of her, so I had to clean what I could. I scrubbed some soap onto her cuts and burns.

Tory lets go of me, and wipes the tears from her face with her sleeve. She holds Harry's stuff close and tightens the grip on them. "Do you wanna see him?" she asks.

I pause. I really don't know what to say. "I don't know if that is such a great idea," I said.

"Please? I haven't seen him smile, or even show signs of happiness. Maybe if he sees you, he might smile," Tory said. She looked at me with her red, puffy eyes. I sighed. "Fine. But only for five minutes. I don't wanna see him long."

Tory grew a closed-mouth smile. She took Harry's stuff, and helped me walk down the stairs. Her mom's car pulled up, and Tory helped me into the car. "Hi Alex, how's the leg?" Christy asked.

"Getting better, but I still have a long road to recovery," I said. This is going to be the most awkward car ride I'm ever going to be in.

~~~
Tory helped me out of the car. I grabbed my crutches, and the two of them helped me inside. "Alex, how about you sit in the couch here and I'll go get Harry," Christy said.
I feel sick. Too much has happened here, too much has happened to the two of us. I shouldn't of came. I shouldn't of done this. What was I thinking. What was I thinking?
Harry walked downstairs. He wore only grey sweatpants, and no shirt. Fuck. He looks so damn good without a shirt on.
He looked exhausted, like he hasn't slept in days. His hair was extremely messy. Harry tried running his fingers through his hair, in attempts to tame it. He looked at me with his tired green eyes. "Hi Harry," I managed to say. His name burned as it rolled off my lips.
"Hi Alex."
