Chapter 10

Monster

Invisible Jet

The Invisible Jet was flying over Metropolis, the second to last city to get captured by Thawne or Professor Zoom as he likes to call himself. Barry looked down at the city that was once called "The City of Tomorrow". Barry was sitting with Terry in the back room, they were both watching out a window. He had decided to learn more about the future he was in. He was going to ask everyone about the future or what happened to them in this future.

"What happened to everyone?" Barry asked Terry.

"What do you mean?" Terry asked.

"Since when do we start killing our enemies? Since when do we stoop down to their level?" Barry questioned.

"Like we said before Barry, things aren't like the past. We're in a dystopian future. The only way to change this future is to kill Thawne." Terry didn't answer Barry's question.

"That wasn't my question." Barry reminded Terry.

"Many of us changed when we lost people closest to us or when we saw horrifying things that we could never unsee." Terry stated.

"What were these horrifying things?" Barry asked.

"Diana saw every Justice League Beyond member die." Terry stated. "I don't blame her for being the way she is. As much as I hate her right now, I know what she's been through, watching everyone die. It's just she could've prevented a lot of this."

"What about Jason and Lex?" Barry said.

Terry sighed, "Jason and Lex were already like this before. Jason came back from the dead, nothing like the Jason you knew, it's a long story, one I don't want to take the time telling. Lex, well you know Lex."

"What about you?" Barry asked another question.

"I was the last one to become a murderer. Before, I always had this thought in my mind that what everyone else was doing was wrong, that we shouldn't be murderers. I was so naïve. Then, one of Thawne's soldiers killed my wife, Dana Tan-McGinnis. He shot her in the heart, right in front of me. I saw his eyes, there was a scar over his right eye. That's how I remembered him, the soldier with the scar." Terry didn't even let out a tear, it was clear he had seen worse things. Barry couldn't think of anything worse than seeing your own wife die.

"I'm assuming you killed the soldier." Barry inferred.

"Not when I first met him, he got away. I went around, questioning dozens of other soldiers who killed my wife, they didn't know. Finally, a year later, I caught up with the soldier who killed my wife. I found him, killing a husband and a wife. I recognized his scar over his eye. When I found him, I beat the living hell out of him. After I found my hand, covered in his blood, I removed his mask, covering most of his face to find that he was only a kid, a damn kid." Terry explained. "That didn't stop me though, I kept beating him. I learned that day, we all have a monster inside of us and all it took to release that monster was one bad day. There's a saying we have in the future, 'All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man to lunacy'. That saying is true for everything. I once was the protector of Gotham, a boogeyman for criminals but a savior for Gotham's citizens. But one action, one bad day, turned me into a murderer and the sad thing is, is that I don't see anything wrong with it. These sons of bitches deserve it, they don't deserve a life."

"Terry, this is right. What would Bruce or Clark think of this?" Barry questioned.

"Bruce and Clark aren't here. As much as I miss them, as much as I want them here, they're not here." Terry stated.

"So you're going to honor them by doing the things they protected from?" Barry asked.

"This isn't about honoring them, Barry. It's about saving the future and stopping Thawne." Terry said, "I'm sorry if you don't agree with our ways but this isn't like the past. We live in a hellhole and in this world, the only way to fight against people like Thawne, is to cross lines and let go of the past."
