Chapter 17
Bella’s POV
The days that followed probably were a few of the best days of my life. No, scrap that. The days that followed WERE the best days of my life. Edward, who now was his 17 year old self again, and I, who also was my vampire self again, could spend entire days making long walks on the beach, or look at the beauty of nature. It wasn’t uncommon that we just would sit somewhere all day to talk, to laugh and to enjoy each other’s company. Isle Esme was perfect in every way, and for me absolute paradise. Everything was peaceful and cheerful.
This soon changed when after a few days, I had lost track of how many days we had been there quite a while ago, the phone rang. The sound was alarming, dangerous. It felt as if what was about to happen was very bad and that I didn’t want it to happen at all. Edward picked up the phone and I stood next to him, exactly hearing what was said. ‘Hello?’ Edward said. ‘Edward? Edward, is that you?’ the voice on the other side of the line said. I immediately knew that it was Jacob. ‘Jacob? What’s wrong?’ Edward asked. ‘He came… I couldn’t help it, I just couldn’t stop him…’ Jacob started to ramble. The panic was hearable and it terrified me. ‘Calm down Jacob. Who is he? What is going on?’ Edward asked Jacob, stressing every word. ‘The moment you guys left… GET YOUR HANDS OFF HER,’ Jacob yelled. A laugh, nothing more than a chuckle, could be heard. I didn’t recognize it but I knew it was male for sure. Then, nothing. ‘Jacob? JACOB,’ Edward yelled into the phone, but it had no effect. The line was dead.
We didn’t have to pack since we barely had taken anything with us. We took the boat back immediately and when we reached land, we ran to the airport as quick as we could. Thanks to Edward’s charms we got seats on a private plane heading back, and the moment we landed we rushed out of the plane and ran to the house immediately.
Once arrived, it was a terrifying sight. The house was exactly as we had left it. The wedding decorations still were hanging, the dance floor still was dominating the greatest part of the area… Even the cake was still there, barely touched. ‘This is bad…’ Edward muttered. I couldn’t agree more, but I stayed silent. Not only was there no sign of Carlisle, Esme and the rest, but also my human family seemed to have vanished. Edward and I ran to the wedding location and a semi-unknown smell immediately penetrated my nose. That smell… I had smelled it before, but I just had no idea where. ‘All the smells seem to go in that direction, so we are going to follow it,’ Edward said, pointing into the direction that we were going to go. I nodded as a reply, not able to get out anything else. I didn’t know who the smell belonged to, but I was sure that it was a vampire and I was sure that it was male. Whoever this smell belonged to probably was the man who had laughed whilst we were on the phone with Jacob.
The track took us far. So far that at points I thought we had lost the scent. Then, luckily enough, we were able to retrieve it again a few paces later. All the alarm bells inside my head were ringing. How was one vampire, if he didn’t have help, able to take a group of at least 50 vampires AND a few werewolves? It made me fear the person who was behind this even more.
The noises came earlier than the sight. I heard someone talking, probably whispering, in a reassuring way. It sounded as if the owner of the voice tried to calm someone down, to sooth someone. There was no response from anyone, so either it was working really well or the other person was unconscious. Edward and I got closer to the origin of the sound, which seemed to be some kind of cave. The closer we got, the more we could hear. ‘It’s all going to be okay,’ I heard someone mutter. ‘Everything is going to be okay. We will get out of here and I shall protect you whatever happens,’ I quickly realized that it was Jacob speaking to someone. But, to who?
We soon had reached the entrance of the cave and I peeked inside. There was only one figure who actively moved and it was Jacob, hovering over an assumedly lifeless body. The hair and posture made me realize that it was Jade, but what was she doing here? And where was the rest? I hadn’t seen her on the wedding, even though I had invited her, and now I thought of it, I actually hadn’t seen her at all after she had vanished when she had seen Darren. Thanks to all the stress and happiness I totally had forgotten to think about her, and I felt bad.
I took a few steps inside of the cave and my light footsteps were barely hearable. Yet, Jacob did look up when I came close enough. ‘Bella, you shouldn’t have come here, it’s a…’ he started, looking into my eyes with a terrified look.
‘Trap,’ someone finished for him. I turned around to see someone standing in the cave opening, his hands around Edward’s neck, ready to pull his head off. ‘You,’ I said. ‘Me,’ said Greg.
