But He's My Best Friend...

Chapter 13

Luke

The sun just had went down I could barley see outside all I saw was momma Johnson's car pull in the driveway. I quickly checked the downstairs area of the house and saw no one, the only rooms upstairs were Kjs and Kolbis and the bathroom. I quickly ran back upstairs checking Kjs room, no site of anyone then went to Kolbis room and didn't see a thing either.

"Baby?" I said walking to the bathroom

"Yeah? Is momma home?"

I gulped in relief

"She just pulled up, you okay?"

"I'm about to come out"

I walked back downstairs still confused about who opened and closed the door so fast, Derik's never been one to come in the house that would be to easy for him.. I sat on the couch by Kolbi waiting for momma J to come in, Kj came downstairs and went to the kitchen and back out.

"I thought mom was home?"

"She is"

"Where is she? I thought I heard the back door open earlier?"

"She just pulled up a second ago babe, come here"

She looked at me with concern in her eyes. She already knew what I was about to tell her so I didn't say a word I just wrapped her up in my arms and held her close to me. A few seconds later momma J walked in with a smile on her face, she kissed Kolbis head, then mine then Kj's before walking to put her things away in the kitchen. She returned a few seconds later with a envelope.

Kaelyn

"Oh honey this was in the mail box for you, no address or anything it just says your name" momma spoke.

My body tensed up and Luke just held me closer, I took the envelope from moms hands as she went on to take a shower so she could relax for the night.

"Luke I don't wanna open it.. Here"

I handed it to him my hands shaking. He sat it down beside him and turned me around to face him. I looked in his soft brown eyes and saw the hurt and concern in them..

"Kaelyn.. It's going to be okay, I'm not leaving your side until he's locked up"

Tears fell from my eyes and I wrapped my arms around him. I don't know what I did to deserve such a caring lovable man like Luke but I thank God for him everyday.. I didn't know weather or not I should tell mom about Derik coming back or not.. She's already under a lot of stress as it is.

"I love you" was all I managed to get out..

Luke drawing circles with his thumb on my back calming me down just being in his arms.. I know during the day before sunrise he has to get up and go work with his daddy on the farm and it's harvest season starting tomorrow so he'll be working late hours.. He'll be exhausted and I can't ask him to not leave my side, that would be selfish of me.

"I love you too" he whispered.

I got off his lap and walked into the kitchen to get a drink, then I walked back to my momma's room to talk to her, I figured I might as well tell her what's going on just in case it makes matters worse, cause we can't go to the police cause Deriks father is the sherif and it doesn't do any good when he don't believe us.

Luke

While kj went into her moms room I decided I would open the envelope so I could see what it said.

Is all it said.. I gritted my teeth and crumbled the paper. Derik was smart, he knew harvest season started tomorrow.. He knew when I would be gone and so would Momma J. I needed to get Kj prepared, maybe I should take her to our house.. No that would just let him know she's scared. I took a deep breath and told Kj I would be right back.

I drove to my house grabbed my little 9mm, something I knew Kj could handle if she needed to. I loaded it and stuck it the waist of my jeans. Momma went to town earlier for the week to get some groceries, pa was out in the barn making sure everything was prepared for tomorrow, I heard back to Kj's..

When I pulled up I saw movement towards the back of the house. Someone dressed in all black, I quickly turned off the lights and cut the engine jumping out and running back towards the house. He was gone.. I looked north of me towards the woods and saw him take off I'm that direction. I took the gun out from my waist and ran after him trying to keep up but he was to far ahead and already crossed the creek by the time I was able to make my way threw the darkness.. He has this all planned I mumbled. He's been scoping out her house and everything for at least a few weeks, he knows his way thru the woods and across the creek by the back of his hand.. I put the gun back in the waist of my belt and jogged back up to the house.

"Luke?" Is that you?"

"Yeah Kolbs it is"

"Cause I saw someone in the back window earlier but he ran away"

I looked down at him and he looked frightened

"It's okay bud I saw him to I scared him off"

He nodded and laid his head back down on his pillow.
I walked into the kitchen and found kj and momma J. They both looked relived to see me back. I stood next Kj she leaned her head against my side and sighed. I rubbed her shoulder.

"I hate to say it but he's got this place scoped out.."

"What?" Kj shot up

"I just chased him threw the woods out back but he was gone across the creek by the time my eyes adjusted to the darkness"

Kaelyn laid her head on the table and momma j stood up and took her plate to the sink. I knelt down next to Kj and kissed her cheek rubbing her back softly..

"Let's just all get some sleep.." I said. "Why don't Kolbi sleep with you tonight momma and I'll make a pallet on the floor in Kj's room"

"Luke I trust you with my daughter not to force her to do anything she don't want to Do, the pallet on the floor days are over. Why don't you just sleep with her and comfort her cause I know you're the only one that can right now."

I looked up at momma J and stood up and hugged her.

"Thank you" I whispered in her ear.

Kaelyn went on up to her bed while I picked Kolbi up and carried him into momma's room for the night. I went and double checked all the doors and windows in the house. Then I walked up to kaelyns room she was already laying in bed, I laid the pistol on the night stand and she looked at it her eyes kindve widened but she laid back down. I stripped down to my boxers and climbed in bed with her, turning off the lamp and wrapping my arms around her as she cuddled up to my chest..
