I ran all the way home after hearing the news. My feet pounding against the ground. I saw my house in plain sight and a wide grin spread across my face. I quickly fumbled with my keys my hands slippery from sweat so it took a few tries to open the door. Once in I raced to make shift emergency room we made in my house in one of the guest rooms. I didn't hesitate to go in like all the other times. I wasn't alone it seemed that everyone wanted to be here to witness Tara's recovery. I was a bit bumped as I wanted it to be just the two of us. once Fred saw me he quickly pulled me to the front where I saw her. Tara looking weak but she was alive. Alive. That was all it took for me to regain composure.
I stared in awe, shock and disbelief. I thought for sure that she would not make it but yet here she was. Her tight kinky curls sprawled on the pillow. Her eyes landed on me before mine landed on hers. Her flower right on the table next to her, where it would always be. Her eyes displayed the same emotions as mine. I turned around and looked at everyone giving them a subtle hint that they could leave now. when they didn't get the hint Fred stepped in and said "So who wants lunch". Which everyone agreed and cheered to instantly. Before he left he squeezed my shoulder. Making it just Tara and I.
Once everyone left the room it felt like the room was much bigger. I made my way to a chair nearby her bed, not uttering a word. Because what does one say to someone when you thought for sure they were going to die? She looked at me then but her recent emotions vanished and were replaced with something else. Like she was happy. And this was different from her being okay because it looked like she had defeated something in her.
She started speaking her voice sounding rusty from not being active much. I wanted to get her some water but it felt inappropriate at this given moment. She cleared her throat a few times. "Didn't think I would live to see you again." She said humour laced in her words
"Well the universe always has a way of surprising us." I replied
We both chuckled at that because the universe never did fail to surprise us.
"So tell me while I was 'gone' what happened?" she asked
"Well where should I begin" I breath out.
"Well people normally start from the beginning." she said teasingly
After telling her what happened. With the drowning drowned and how we escaped her expression never once changed it stayed neutral. I wish she would have showed a different expression something to give me a sign into what she was thinking.
"So Ava's here then." She sates
"Yeah she's in her old room but she doesn't talk to anyone we still can't get over what she did." I shrug
"We need to talk to her about what she did, find out why she did it. We also need to know who those men are and she knows." she responds calmly and this is the Tara I was used too.
I want to protest and say we leave her where we found her but I don't because in this atmosphere everything is calm and I haven't felt this calm in a very long time especially around her.
I slowly lean my head forward towards her forehead to feel her heat because the last time we touched she was cold. Dead cold. She didn't back away from my touch she embraced it. I closed my eyes savouring this moment. My breath mingled with hers and the urge to kiss her rose. I open my eyes to see that hers where shut tight. She opened her eyes once she noticed a change and just stared at me. Her beautiful brown eyes reflecting my face. I lean back words and smiled. No words are needed to be said to realize the air between us has changed. The past events have now shaped us. We were now friends and maybe something more. She wasn't the cold, broody Tara and I wasn't the same optimistic guy.
I got up knowing she needed time to rest. I made a gesture to leave, but she quickly stopped me. her face contorting into a face of terror, like if I went through that door I would never return. My heart clenched at the sight of her.
"Don't leave." Her voice inaudible but I still heard her
My breathing halted and she didn't need to tell me any more to persuade my mind I already knew I was staying.
"I don't like being alone anymore." She whispered her curls hiding her face.
Seeing Tara this vulnerable made me understood what she meant. Being alone is a dark scary place and we had both been there to know it's true nature. She patted the space next to her on the bed giving me a small smile. I slid in next to her and played with her curls using the same rhythm I did when she has her nightmares. Being next to her like this was enough for me to feel content. Her even breathing soon lulled me to sleep. And we were both gone into different paradise.
