"ey, lovebirds, are you riding or not?" the carnie shouted at us, extending an arm and waving at us.
"uhm,,yeah, yeah..sorry for that." I called out. I simply grabbed Matts hand and led him up the steps towards the ride.
I sat down on the front and pulled him down next to me.
"Listen, matt,i'm sorry. you don't have to tell me about her, it's okay. I shouldn't pry."i squeezed his hand and hoped to get our happy vibe back.
"okay ladies and gents, keep all appendages, that's arms and feet for you boys and girls, inside the carriage at all times!" hollered the carnie before turning the ride on. I placed both my hands on the handle in front of me and gave matt a final glance. He was staring up ahead. No emotion on his face.
I'm a screamer. I scream at rides. so i pretty much blew matts ear off during the entire ride. When we rolled to a stop, i was feeling pretty much exhilarated. I turned to Matt who had a grimace on his face. "wow. you can really scream there. Are you going to be like that on all rides?" he looked at me skeptically.
I laughed." sorry, i do get a bit carried away when I'm having fun.." I hugged myself, not knowing what to do with my hands.
When the locks of the ride released, matt stood up and offered a hand to pull me out. We walked out of the platform and back into the throng of people.
Matt suddenly stopped and pulled us aside, away from foot traffic.
"Listen, I appreciate what you said back there. I'm just not ready to talk about that part of my life, just yet.." he shrugged and stuffed his hands in his front pockets.
"well, i shouldn't be nosy anyway. It was totally my fault." I apologized. I wanted to kick myself for being such a debbie downer with my "bright" ideas.
we stood there facing each other.
"so..do i get to,choose the next ride?" He asked, grinning at me.
I felt instantly relieved.
"of course!" I smiled at him and splayed both hands in front of me.
"great, cause, I want to try that out." He said pointing to the bump cars.
"oh, you are so on." I cried and hooked my arm to his as we sped through the crowd.
We rode and re-rode the roller coaster, carousel, caterpillar and even did paddle boats. I can't remember the last time I had this much fun. we were sitting on one of the benches eating corndogs and nachos, drying ourselves under the sun after we had a little too much fun at the paddle boats.
" I think the last time I went to something like this was when I was a kid, with my parents. I've forgotten how much fun these places can be." I smiled at Matt.
He looked at me incredulously. "really? It has been that long!? don't you ever go to this things with your friends even back in highschool? or college!?"
" Oh,God, I was so boring in highschool! i almost always never went out!" I hid my face in my hands.
I heard Matt chuckle. " I bet you stayed at home and did all your assignments on time, only went to the mall for necessities and to watch a movie."
