He lost his brother a month ago
His picture's on the wall and it reminds me

Levi knew your life was never easy. You had lost all of your family to the Titan and everyday was a struggle. You had kept a small picture of your older brother, a solider until the end. Levi saw how slowly you lost your will to live, but the only reason you were still living was for him.

When he brings me coffee, his smile
I wish I could be with him 'til my last day

You had brought him his tea everyday and chatted with him for hours. You did want to be alone, ever. And Levi never let you be alone, so you guess it worked pretty well. He was a bit scared about what would happen to you, but you assured him you were very careful. And you were....

Until that day.

Can't look back, they will not come back
Can't be afraid, but time after time

You were on a mission, Squad Hanji as usual. You were riding, commanding a small section of the squad when a Titan came and wiped out your entire section out. You were first. You were smashed into a tree branch. You died on impact.

It is like a nightmare and it's pain for me
Because nobody wants to die too fast

Levi found your body like that. Hanging from a branch, blood surrounding your body and dripping off the branch. He yelled in agony. He landed on the branch next to you had held your head in his lap. Why had someone taken you away? Why did he have to live the rest of his life without you.

Remember the day of grief, now it's strange for me

He had been lucky enough to bring your body back to the base. He buried you close to the field of flowers you would often visit together. He visited your grave everyday and cried. He had become softer after your death, much to everyone's disbelief. They finally understood that you were the glue that held him together.

I can see your face, I can hear your voice

Levi had frequent nightmares. He would wake up covered in sweat, the same cry for help from you ringing in his head. He couldn't help but think if it was his fault, if he had been with you if you hadn't have died. But he knew that he couldn't have prevented it, that fate was fate and you were gone. There was nothing he could do about that.

I'm crying, missing my lover
I don't have the power on my side forever

Soon after the upset stage, Levi went back to his stoic self. He realized that he couldn't mope forever, so he went back to work. This time he was determined to not get attached to anything. He didn't take to anyone unless they engaged him first. The only people who saw the true Levi were Erwin and Hanji. Barely anyone else knew what Levi's true feelings were.

Oh, where is my lover in this final hour
I'm standing alone today, calling out your name

EveryTime Levi went out on a mission, he was vaguely aware he could die at any moment. And without you at his side, he wouldn't care if he did. He knew that he should live, humanity needed him, but he knew if he died, he would get to see you again.
