Renee and her husband had this twinkle in their eyes when they figured out I was an Alpha. It was as if I was this new born puppy they had just got and they could teach new tricks to. “What’s the big deal, I mean I know it’s cool but there are tons of people with powers here?”
“They have powers, but not like you. Not only are you a very skilled teen without out the powers but Alphas are special. Sure, everybody has power but they only have one. One girl might have to spend her life perfecting her wind skill so that she can use it for all purposes when in need, while you have everything. You’re the only Alpha on campus, out of the kids, teens, and adults.”
“So basically I’m the black sheep.”
“More like the golden egg.” Dr. Kindler said, trying to make light of the situation.
“Isn’t that a lot of pressure? I mean everyone else gets to perfect their skill and I have to worry about how many?”
“Thousands. Don’t worry that’s what this institute is for. Your mom would be proud. We can tell your going to be very skilled. Plus we’re always here for you. We can be like a family. We are way younger than the other teachers and we’re cooler.”
This made me laugh and took the stress off the new news. “Okay. Okay. But you guys can’t ground me!” I said in a joking matter.
“We doubt it’ll be needed.” She laughed. “Anyways, follow me, we’ll go take your ID and then you’ll be done for the day. It’s only midnight and that’s when all the kids around here get out during the night. You get powers and you think you can run about like its nothing.” Renee had a very chill tone. She seemed like the type of person that doesn’t get mad or freak out unless it is needed.
I took my picture and for once I actually liked how I looked. Despite the day’s travel and physical and mental exercise my makeup and hair still looked decent. It wasn’t a great picture but at least I wouldn’t be too ashamed of wearing it on a lanyard around my neck. Renee offered to help me find my way to my dorm but I insisted that she go home with Dr. Kindler. They had been with me for a while and God knows how much they probably wanted to go home. She gave me a map of the campus and it definitely helped but not as much as I hoped it would. The map was pretty clear, however to read a map you need a starting point, and I didn’t know where that was. In the midst of trying to find my way someone purposely placed themselves in front of me so that I would bump into them.
“Parker Damon, you must be new.” From those seven words I already could tell what type of guy he was. He had this cocky attitude and I could already tell without even glancing at him that that attitude was gained by the amount of girls that fall for him here.
“Reagan. So I assume you’re the unofficial welcoming committee.”
“New girls got jokes huh?” He grabbed my ID that everyone had to wear on a lanyard to analyze who I was. My ID said:
Name: Reagan Marie Dalton
DOB: 11/21/96
Grad Year: 2015
Height: 5, 7.5”
Eyes: Green
Hair: Black
Dorm: Lexington Hall
Power: Alpha
Before he had the chance to return it from me I snatched it from his hands and said, “Done investigating yet?” He just chuckled. At this point I began walking again, with my face towards the map. Even though I made it clear that I was done talking, I could feel him walking next to me. “Um, going somewhere?”
“Yes, actually.”
“Care to elaborate?”
“Lexington is where my dorm is too. I can help you find it you know, because right now your heading in the opposite direction.”
“Fine, Patrick, which way?”
He was surprised that I got his name wrong even though I knew I purposely did that. I wanted to play with his big ego, show him what it’s like not to be so admired.
He smirked at me and said, “It’s Parker. Parker Damon. Don’t worry when you talk to people you’ll hear tons about me. Follow me. Do you know what floor your on?”
“Floor 21 room 805. Want to give me the ‘low down’ on stuff?”
“Well Lexington Hall is a co-ed dormitory building. Sadly, the floors are separated. Girls have odd floors and guys have evens. As for the school, it’s like most other normal high schools.”
“Except for the fact that we have powers….”
“Speaking of powers what’s yours, Dalton, I didn’t get to see it because you so rudely snatched it out of my hands.”
“Alpha.”
“HAH. Yeah right! The institute has never had a student as an alpha, only one professor, but he’s gone now.” He lifted my card again and realized I wasn’t lying. I didn’t really react. I wanted to see how he did more. “Whoa. New girls got skill. You’re the only one on campus you know. Some people will think it’s cool. But on the other hand you are the odd one out. What have you been able to do so far?”
“Nothing actually. It’s a long story but basically I just found out this morning.”
“Wait, Dalton? Holy crap! Your mom died this morning.”
“She was killed.” I spat back.
“Sorry. If it helps she was a hero around here. But you probably already knew that.”
“I didn’t even know about the AOSS or about powers this morning.”
“Your mom never told you?”
“Nope, I found out from the head of AOSS. Going in here Hosten explained to me my power, but when I got tested turns out I had thousands of them.”
“That’s intense.”
“Seriously. Anyways, how far are we from Lexington because I’ve had enough of our little heart to heart.”
“Actually we passed it; I just wanted to get to know the hot new girl.” As he said this he backed me up towards a wall and had both hands on the wall. As he was looking down on me I realized he was actually pretty good looking. Hot even. He was tall, had blue eyes and brown hair that was longer than a buzz cut but not exactly Justin Bieber. I could’ve kissed him, but I just got here and I don’t know him too well.
I smirked at him to show that I thought this was funny. “I can find my way from here Pat.” And like that I strode off.
