I woke up randomly in the middle of the night. I scanned the room for my alarm clock and the time was confirmed at 4am. Then I realized that I was no longer on the floor. I peered over the edge of my bed a found Matt shutting off the computer. “Whoa sorry I fell asleep, so much for an all nighter.”

“Eh, its okay, you’re tired. Tired people sleep.” He said as he smiled at me so that I knew it was okay.

“How’d I get up here? Weren’t we on the floor before?”

“We were, but you fell asleep like an hour ago, so I put you in your bed under the covers. You were right it does get cold.”

“How’d you get me on my bed?”

“Reagan, you’re a light weight teenage girl, not an African hippo.” He placed the laptop on my desk and turned off the TV. He took off his pants leaving him in boxers and a shirt, and then took the shirt off too. He had a full toned six pack that looked great against his lightly tanned skin. “Can I sleep in here with you?”

                “Like in my bed….?”

“Yeah. I can go on the couch if you want. I’m not a perv.”

“No it’s okay. I know you’re not dumb enough to try anything.” He got into the bed and under the sheets.

It was so cold in my room, even under the sheets. I even began to shiver a bit. Matt picked up on it and said, “You’re cold?”

“Yeah, it’ll probably pass.” Before I could let out another shiver he came closer and wrapped me in his arms, close to his body. “What are you doing?” I was kind of taken aback. I even flinched a little bit out of surprise.

“Don’t worry; I was just trying to give you some body heat. You’re shivering like crazy.” He let go on command, and I knew he wasn’t trying to be sly or anything. But as soon as he let go I was shaking and shivering again.

“I take it back it’s too freaking cold!” And again the warmth came back and I was no longer shaking. We were so close that I could feel him breathing at a steady rhythm. I had to learn to keep cool around Matt. I can’t think that everything he does is a move on me. After a short while I fell asleep. It was undoubtedly the best sleep I had gotten in a while. I guess sleeping on a mattress made of bricks made you appreciate a real bed. When I woke up the clock read 2pm. I was no longer huddled up next to Matt, and I assumed he let ago as soon as I fell asleep and stopped shivering. It was reassuring to know I could trust him, and that he wasn’t just some creep. I took a really long shower and then tiptoed in my closet, trying not to wake up Matt. I a put on a loose blue top with a grey scarf on top and wore ripped jeans. I kept my hair its naturally wavy self, and put on my usual mascara-eyeliner look.

“Rey!” I heard Matt call from the shower. Rey? Did he just call me Rey?

                “Um, yeah?”

“Can you give me a towel, please?”

“Sure.” I went into the towel closet grabbed one and handed it to him from the door.

                “Thanks.”

“No problem. Meet me downstairs when you’re ready.” He came downstairs in a black v neck and the same jeans he wore yesterday. The v neck was from my “lost and found.” “Hey, so I was thinking, when are we going to go back to find your dad’s file?”

“I want to go as soon as possible but we need to wait until another big event. If we go on an ordinary day, people might notice.”

“Isn’t there a dance like two weeks from now?”

“That’s right! And it’s more of a homecoming dance; it’s a lot fancier than last night. People won’t even notice. You’re a genius!” He picked me up from where I was sitting on the counter and twirled me around. I was spinning and then he did the dip that you do when you’re doing a fancy ballroom dance.

“I should be a genius more often if it makes people this happy.” I paused for a bit and then just said what I was thinking. That’s another thing I needed to work on: saying what was on my mind. “What do you think we’ll find when we see the files?”

“The answer to our questions and the truth, hopefully. Uh, can I ask you something?”

“Sure.” I had resumed to my position, sitting on the counter, and Matt was leaning against the granite by the sink.

“I heard some rumors about some mission that you went on; apparently you guys got picked for something pretty big.”

“But you don’t care about what the big mission was do you? What’d you hear?”

“Something about you being friends with the enemy. Vague stuff.”

“Um, well that is as far from the truth as it can get. I mean it’s sort of true but not in the sense that it’s being said. Do people really think I’m teamed up with the Malum?”

“No, it’s more like they just know you knew someone from them. People are dumb, but I don’t think they’re dumb enough to think you’d team up with the people that you know….” He was referring to what happened with my mom, and trying not to offend me. He could’ve just said it because he’d only be saying the truth, and right now all I wanted was the truth.

“I had this friend, best friend that I’ve known forever. Basically, all my life she’s been a part of the Malum, and when I went running to her about how I was worried about my mom, she already knew. And she’s known all the time she’s known me that I had powers and what my mom did.”

“Do you like drama or does drama just love you?” It was sweet that he was trying to lighten the mood, but honestly I was over the whole thing. Nat can go find new friends in her evil killing clan.

“Hmm…I’d say it’s a little bit of both.”
