Matt and I spent the rest of the Saturday hanging out and watching movies. He made the same pizza he did the night before, which I didn’t mind because it was honestly one of the best pizzas I had ever had. Again he slept in my bed but there was no need for him to “warm me up” because it wasn’t as cold as the night before. Now it was Sunday morning and I was taking the last hot water shower that I would take in a while. After I got dressed and put on my makeup, I found Matt sitting on the floor of my room watching TV. I let myself fall back in my soft comfy bed. “I’m going to miss this.” I said through the pillows and sheets that muffled my voice.
“Oh come on, the dorm beds aren’t that bad.” He tried to keep a straight face but then we both burst out in laughter. “That was funny, I should be a comedian.”
“You ready to go?” I was still laughing a bit.
“Do we have to? It’s only one.”
“Yeah we have class tomorrow so I’ll need the rest, sorry.”
“Okay, I’m ready when you are.” He messed up his hair a little and then stood next to me. I thought of the institute and we ended up right in my dorm room. Luckily Dotty wasn’t there so I wasn’t questioned about Matt. The rest of the week went pretty fast. Class was pretty normal. One of the perks of going to a school that assigns you missions and training is that there is very minimal homework. Only occasionally did I have an essay or a project to do. It was Friday which meant it was one week away from me and Matt going back to the lab basement. I was sitting in the dining hall for my break with Dotty, Henderson, and Derek when Matt walked in. He bought a water bottle and then spotted me and walked over. “Hey, I didn’t know we had the same break.” I said as he took the seat in front of me.
“I don’t, I asked to go to the bathroom. I needed some fresh air and in the middle of my walk I felt like I needed some water.” He said as he lifted his water bottle.
“Skipping class? Not so smart of you, Matt.” I made sure to say this in a joking way, because it wasn’t that big of a deal, he was going back anyways.
“I’m glad I came over here though, I needed to talk to you. You still up for the dance?”
At first I was kind of confused because I thought we’d just skip the dance and then go, but then I figured it out. He probably thought that’d be too obvious. “What? Oh! The dance! Yeah, I’m still up for it.” I could feel Derek staring at us, closely listening even though he was less than a couple of inches away. “Yeah, I’ll help you set up.” I improvised.
“Yeah. Set up. Right.” He sounded kind of disappointed, but he played along anyways. “If I didn’t get in trouble so much I wouldn’t be a part of the dumb committee. Maybe we can hang out during the dance too. I had a lot of fun last weekend.”
“Me too, but speaking of trouble, won’t you be in more trouble if you don’t get back soon?”
He looked at the clock and realized I was right. “You’re right, I better get back. Here have this.” He pulled out a small turquoise rose that I assumed he died to look like my favorite color.
“What’s it for?”
“It’s sort of a thank you and a sorry at the same time. I kicked your ass pretty hard, so I owe you.”
He was half way to the exit when I said, “You did not!”
“Well look at you,” Dotty said questioning Matt and his present.
“Calm down, we are just friends. His dad was killed through a mission too, so he knows what I’m going through.” I could hear Derek take a deep sigh of relief. What was up with boys and being all possessive? I changed the subject. “How’s soccer, Derek?”
“I made varsity and practice is going pretty good. Coach says I’m one of the best players on the team. You should come to our game next week.” He said sounding proud and successful.
“Sure.” Ever since he told me how he felt about me I always over examined everything I said to him. I didn’t want to sound too excited, or he’d get the wrong idea, but at the same time he’s my friend and I was excited to watch him play. If I weren’t such a klutz at relationships, and didn’t have plans to leave the institute soon, I’d definitely give him a try.
“Do you do any sports?” he asked.
“I used to do field hockey back in New York. I loved being on the field and being a defensive player. One game the goalie wasn’t doing too well, and I ended up blocking 40 goals. I miss the field.” I missed playing on a league and being the star of the team. Before knowing I was an alpha, it was one of my major purposes in the big city. People from all over knew me, whether it is because I played them or family members, they knew I was one of the top players. What sucked the most was that that was all gone when I came here. The institute didn’t have a field hockey team, and even if they did I would have to start all over.
“You should try soccer; we have a girl’s team.”
“Sorry, but my heart is on my hockey stick.” My purple and silver limited edition Nike field hockey stick that my mom got me last Christmas. It was kind of sad to think I might never get to use it again. Maybe next time Matt and I went back to my apartment I would hang it up.
“Understood.”
Just then Henderson’s phone rang. He looked down to analyze the text message and almost immediately I knew what it was. “Is it what I think it is?” I said surprised by how much I actually wanted to go through another mission.
“Yup. Let’s go we’re free for the rest of the day.” He said as he got up and made his way to 216. Of course, as fellow members we followed. It was go time.
