That next morning, we all gathered in the kitchen to discuss what we all wanted for breakfast. It wasn't even 10:00 am and the twins were walking in through the front door. Kens asked them if they would like to join us for some breakfast. They didn't turn down the offer. I wasn't sure what the day was going to bring us with them here for the day. I guess I didn't care since I was planning on going riding. The outdoors just seemed like a good place to be in for a while.
We all finally decided on what we wanted to eat. My dad made eggs, toast, bacon and hash browns for everyone. I ate it pretty quickly, so I could spend more time outside. But, as I was eating, I saw Ethan glance at me every once and awhile. It was strange for me, since I've never had a guy interested in me before nor had a guy keep looking at me. Oh well. I was the first one done. The sink was full, so I just put my things on the counter and announced that I was going riding. While heading up to my room, I heard Kylie ask where I was. I yelled to her that I was upstairs. Not even 2 minutes later Kylie was in my room. "Hey, are you going riding?" she seemed out of breath.
"Yeah. Wanna come?" I asked not looking back at her.
"Um, well I was wondering if you could give me a ride somewhere?"
"Sure. Where?" I drop what I'm doing and face Kylie.
"To Papaw's" her face lit up every time she talked about Papaw, even at the mention of his name.
"Alright. Yeah, let me get my jacket and we'll go."
"Okay, I'll be downstairs!"
I threw on my favorite Nike hoodie and my moccasins, headed downstairs to where Kylie was waiting for me. I guess she told Kens where I was taking her because now I had to take Kens, and Grayson to Papaw's as well. For some reason Ethan wanted to stay behind. Grayson was trying to convince him to at least go for the car ride. Ethan was hesitant with the offer. After fifteen minutes of nagging and "arguing" he finally gave up and went. We all hopped into my truck, Kylie in the front, with the boys and Kens in the back. Grayson played music on his phone for all of us to listen to, but I didn't have time to pay attention to it since I was driving. Everytime I drive I always give my phone to whoever is next to me, that way I'm not tempted to text and drive. I've been in one bad car wreck and I don't want another one. Even though I wasn't doing anything, the person who ran into me was on their phone.
Once we got to Papaw's, everyone gets out except for Ethan. I got out to say hello and give him a hug. I made sure that my visit was quick. It was hard because he was sick and it hurt me that my best friend was suffering. Everytime I leave his house I'm always in tears, that's how much it hurts me. Cancer kind of just ruins everything it seems like. Papaw knew his time was coming, so he stopped the treatment. All of us encouraged him to keep fighting, but he saw no point at all. There wasn't a lot we could do or say to change his mind, so we just let it go. It took me about ten minutes to say hi and then leave. He knew I was hurting and couldn't handle it. I'm just lucky that he understood.
I made my way back outside and got in the truck. At first it was pretty awkward for me. Ethan was there and I didn't know what to say and I'm not sure he knew what to say. Then finally he spoke up, "I'm Ethan and you're obviously Kolby, it's nice to finally meet you."
"Nice to finally meet you as well." I held my hand to him to shake it while I was still looking at the road.
"I'm sorry I never said anything to you when you were in the living room. I wanted to but-"
I interrupted him. "It's okay Ethan, honestly. Kens just purposely gets under my skin so that I look like the bad guy in front of everyone. It's not your fault. No need to apologize."
"Are you sure? I still feel bad."
"Positive." I'm smiling uncontrollably at this point. Ethan made a point to apologize about not talking to me. Why did that mean so much to me?
