Chapter 10 - I should've never taken my eyes off dad.

"What in the God's name happened here?" Mom shrieked. I was sat on the floor, Hugh on the counter above me; Dave and dad, each on a chair by the dining table.

The problem?

There lay piles upon piles of vegetables, flour, cream, milk and eggs and everything else found in a kitchen on everything that belonged to the kitchen.

Including us.

How did this happen? Let me go back a few hours.

Staturday morning 10am :

"Steph, why don't you invite over your friend for a little cooking session with me here at our house. I could give you both a few tips." Mom said as I put the coffee mug under the machine.

"Or you could give it to me and I'll tell him." I said simply.

"Oh no no. It's not a history fact that you'll pass on to him. I'll cook with you guys and teach you things recipe books can't." She sat on the chair and flipped through the pages of the newspaper. Was it there on the table when I came in? I swear newspapers appeared magically whenever my parents sat on the dining table with tea.

"Fine! I'll go call him." I sighed and went back to my room to get my phone. After that I ended up spending the next hour texting Anna. Looking at the clock I hurriedly got dressed, jumped back downstairs and frowned.

"Are you guys going somewhere?"

"I'm sorry sweetie, but Claire just called, I have to take Max's shift at the diner."

"What about Hugh? He's coming in a few minutes."

"Don't worry sweetie. Take one of my recipe book."

Uh oh. Cooking without someone of the knowledge? We had Dave earlier every time with us. What do we do now? Hugh must have already left and we needed to practice.

"And your dad's home anyway." She added encouragingly and dad burst into a fit of cough.

"Can he cook?"

"No but he can keep you from blowing the house." Dad burst into another round of coughs.

I had called Dave too, just to be on a safer side. And it didn't turn out that bad. Actually dad did know some good tips, thanks to grandma. So naturally, I relaxed.

Big mistake.

Don't they say, one second of distraction can cause a big accident? Well they say the truth. Because that's exactly what happened. I should've never taken my eyes off dad. And Dave shouldn't have been late.

Now :

Imagine your mom finding out the destruction you've done to her beloved kitchen. Imagine her face going red with rage and her hands clenching into fists. I guess you don't even need to imagine further. Because we know, it doesn't end well.

However, now imagine the entire opposite of this thing happening. Mom burst out laughing, real stomach hurting and tears forming laugh as her eyes moved between our flour-cream-egg yolk-clad figures. My mouth hung open as I gaped at her reaction. My eyes met Hugh's and Dave's and saw my reaction reflected there. I had expected her to lash out, throw us out of the kitchen and lecture me till morning came; at least that's what normal, standard moms would do. But I had forgotten this was Amanda Jones I was talking about. My parents were out of breath from laughing out so hard. I couldn't help it, first a small smile threatened to break and a few seconds later I found myself joining them. The two boys stood there gaping, all the mess forgotten.
