Chapter 14 -  I must have put Flash to shame

Dave

"Do something about your phone!" I growled at Hugh. It had been ringing non stop the entire time he's been here. I took a sharp turn as the police got too close to my car.

"Sorry, my hands are full!" He answered, his voice muffled as he stuffed his mouth with the sandwich. The sandwich he held like it was Kohinoor. I chanced a glance at him getting disgusted at the way he ate before quickly looking back at the screen not to have my car crash or worse yet, lose the race.

The race ended (I won by the way) and I checked my phone to see five missed calls from Greg, three from Alicia and before I could call them back I got a text from Emily.

Em : Steph and Cal are in the hospital. Come quickly.

The phone slipped from my fingers and fell to the floor as my heart rate spiked. The panic hit me so hard, all breath left me and I struggled to breathe. My mind said I needed to move, to get going but my legs wouldn't co-operate. I was rooted, stunned.

Terrified.

Steph and Cal are in the hospital.

Steph. Hospital.

Steph.

Steph.

Steph.

No. No. No. I refuse to believe anything was wrong with her.

Hugh must have noticed my expression, the fear in my eyes. He must have asked something I presume, I saw his lips move, but heard nothing. Everything seemed blur, too far, out of focus. Only thing in focus was her face swimming in front of my eyes, an image that was slowly fading.

"Steph. Hospital." I managed to whisper, holding onto the arm of the couch, as if it was the only real thing in the world, but he heard it alright. Those were two words I never wanted to hear in my life.

"What are you waiting for then!?" He said and suddenly I was moving; so fast I must have put Flash to shame. I drove like a maniac; faster than I have ever, even in video games. Hugh tried calling our friends from beside me, but I hardly paid any attention, I was busy hitting the steering wheel when we got a red signal. Bad thoughts circled my mind, worst case images flashed in front of my eyes, Steph in a car accident, Steph lying in a blood of pool, Steph unconscious on a hospital bed....

The minute it turned green I shook the vivid visuals away, breathing hard, I drove; pressing down the accelerator and driving faster and faster.

"Stephanie and Callum -" Hugh began to ask information at the reception with me tapping my foot in impatient irritation when we saw Emily coming to us.

"Dave, Hugh... you're here! Come..." and I followed her like my life depended on it. She wore a blank expression, giving nothing away. I have never seen her being anything but calm and expressionless. But if something had happened to her best friend she wouldn't be so calm now, would she?  None of us felt much like talking, still I tried asking her if my Steph was alright but her phone rang just then reminding me how I had missed their calls. I had never hated myself more than I did at that moment. If only I had just picked up one of their calls. Hugh had been by my side the entire time, muttering everything had to be okay.
