Chapter 34 - I didn't like the sound of it at all.
"Oh yes sir! I did forget to hand it in, didn't I?"
"So you say, you have completed it?"
"Of course sir!"
"That's my girl. I knew I could expect that from you Ms. Jones."
"Always sir."
"See you tomorrow then?"
"It's Christmas." I reminded him. That ought to buy me some time to figure out what to do.
"Oh yes, it is, isn't it?" He almost sounded sad. "Day after that, 9am it is then."
"Yes, yes sure." The line clicked dead and I sank on the couch. I swear this man didn't have the word 'holidays' in his dictionary. I'm glad it wasn't he who decided when students got vacations because then we wouldn't ever.
Dave hovered in front me, puzzled on what to do. "What is it?"
"You're gonna kill me." I said without looking up, my head buried in my hands. How could have I forgotten about it? This article was actually my idea and I had been so excited to write it, the main reason being I had to actually go on a field visit to explore-
"Why would I wanna kill you?"
"I can't go to the Christmas party as your date." I said looking up and meeting his eyes. Hurt flashed in them for just a minuscule second before he smiled and sat next to me.
"What did Mr. Arthur say?"
"There is this article I was supposed to hand in today."
"But you just said you're done with it.... Are you not?"
My face said it all.
"Still, it's okay right? You have entire day tomorrow to complete it...." He let his sentence hang as his eyes caught mine.
"I need to go to the city."
"How is that relevant? What is your article about?"
"I can't tell you that. You'll have to read it. It's just... there are some things you only find there."
"But it's a five hour drive!"
"Exactly."
He slumped back into the couch closing his eyes for a few moments. I was about to open my mouth to profusely apologize again when his eyes flew open and he jumped to his feet.
"We can still make it." He declared.
"We?"
"Yep." He sat back down. "I will drive you there. Collect whatever information it is that you want and we will come back directly to the party."
"It starts at seven. No matter how early we leave we won't make it back on time."
"It starts at seven, which means it starts at nine." He stated. I looked into his earnest eyes and chuckled.
