Chapter 46 - Well, one can't forget seeing a bird's nest on a girl's head.

Dave

"It was a beautiful service, my dear." The elderly lady from the diner Steph's mom worked in said, wiping her eyes. I bowed my head slightly before my eyes darted upwards, in the direction of my room where she was. I wanted nothing more than all people to leave so I could go back to her, to hold her, console her, support her.

When you live in a small town, practically everyone knows everyone. The news had travelled like fire and next second everyone was there to wanting to know what, how and where of the situation. Most of all, everyone was worried about Steph. The sweet, smart, kind, full of life Stephanie whom everybody loved.

But my Steph wasn't her anymore. She had become a walking shell of her previous self. She hadn't uttered a single word since that cursed day. Not when her friends came back the moment they heard, not when Anna arrived and tried talking, not when the entire town assembled to console her. Even when we found out something worse : that Amanda and John had been coming to the airport to pick us up in the newly bought car, a car they had purchased for Steph.

Not a word.

Not a single tear.

Just lifeless eyes which saw nothing, ears which heard nothing and lips which said nothing. And with each desolate second passing I died too.

One by one, people left, shaking their heads, mourning for the sweet girl. Dad stood by the door, being the perfect host. Only our friends and Anna waited and we all went to my room above.

There she lay on the bed on her back, staring at the ceiling, motionless, except for breathing slowly. Al held back a sob and leaned her head on Dylan's chest who too tried hard to not let the tears fall. Em and Cal turned away holding each other. Anna moved into the room and sat beside her on the edge, stroking her hand. Greg left and I knew it was too much for him to take.

"Hey Steph." Anna was saying softly, masking her shaking voice skilfully.

No reaction.

"Steph, you got to eat something." She said soothingly.

Even her eyes didn't move.

"Steph? It's me Anna. Talk to me Steph, this isn't healthy..." Her voice cracked as she choked on her own words and I moved quietly to her, holding her by the shoulders.

"I can't look at her like this." She sobbed as we all went downstairs again. The sight of Steph in this condition was just too much. It would be an understatement if I said, I was dying a little every time I saw her like that. My heart squeezed so painfully that it actually hurt physically. I couldn't eat, sleep or think anything other than what I could do for her. Something. Anything.

"None of us can." Em and Al said.

"What are we going to do?" Cal asked.

"Dad had tried getting a therapist to make her talk, that is the only thing that needs to be done, for her to accept the fact and.. I don't know but talking is important for her. If she doesn't she .." I groaned, slumping down on the couch tugging at my hair. I didn't know what to do anymore. I Just. Didn't. Know.
