Chapter 16 - I evaded the questions like Ignotus Peverell evaded Death.
I opened the scrapbook with a smile and started pasting my pictures. Then I cut my favorite ones from the travel magazine and stuck them too, labelling them and making funny artwork as I went. After a couple of hours I finished and then started from the beginning, turning the pages of memories, pictures of sceneries, where I have been, where my friends have been, where I want to be....
Where my friends have been....
Friends
Oh yes!
In a flash I dived for my phone on the bedside table and quickly dialed. It rang and rang and rang and went straight to voicemail.
Hmmm strange, what could he be possibly busy with...
I dialed again and finally a groggy voice answered.
"Hello?" Dave's irritated tone stung a bit. There wasn't a reason to be rude now, was there?
"Umm hey Dave.." I said slowly and he sucked in a breath.
"Stephanie? What is it?" He sounded worried now. Boy, was he confusing!
"I was just wondering, you're rich, right?" I face palmed after the words left my mouth.
"Uhh..." There was a pause, "you called at 3 in the morning to ask this?" Now he was confused. My eyes snapped to the clock and I gasped, horrified.
"Oh my God! I'm so sorry. So so so sorry! I was working on something and I didn't realize what time it was! God, I feel so stupid." I really did. Never had I felt so embarrassed as I did at that moment.
He chuckled. Dave chuckled. He didn't get angry or annoyed or any of the millions things he should have. Because I would, really. Wake me up before it was absolutely necessary like for school and you would wish you were never born. But he just laughed, as if this whole situation was amusing to him.
Red in the face I mumbled, "I'll just hang up now."
"No! Wait!" He called out. "What are you working on at such a time? And why did you call?"
I should hang up and let him sleep. But if he was okay talking now then I might as well take the advantage. Also he didn't sound much sleepy now, so it was okay.
No it's not! It's 3 in the morning.
"Stephanie? You still there?"
"Yeah no, I was just thinking....I should let you go back sleep."
Say no. Please say no.
"No it's okay. Tell me."
"No really, we can talk at school."
"Tell me."
It was his husky voice, deep from the sleep and the way he said that had me blabber. And I realized there was no way to stop me.
