Chapter 25 - Being with Dave is injurious to health.

"Yes yes yes I remember!" Dave's words floated through the open doorway of the library. For the first time I heard that lightened tone in his deep voice and let me tell you it was a yummy combination. He was laughing and so was she, and I had to admit she sounded like a musical chime, just hanging around and impressing people with musical laugh and soft voice and here I am scaring half the population away just by a snort.

Woah.... Stop right there! What is happening to you? Since when have you started comparing yourself to others?

Oh crap!

Seriously, what is happening to me?

Their laughter faded away, and I continued with my work. By the time Dave did come back, I was almost done with all of my homework.

"Hey, I'm almost do-" I looked up from my book to find her, what was her name again?

Oh yeah Cynthia, standing by the door and stalking towards me, her eyes giving away nothing whatsoever.

"Um, where's Dave?" I asked, closing my book. She took the liberty to get seated beside me on the couch.

"He went to get something to drink." She answered, there was a pause when we just looked at each other and then-

"Oh my God! It's so nice to finally meet you!" She broke out into a grin that threatened to split her face into two. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. All evening I had a feeling of being totally unwelcome here. Well except for by Dave. But you know what I mean. And 'finally meet me'? What's that about?

I cleared my throat. "I'm sorry?" She looked startled as if this wasn't the answer she was expecting. Dave came in just then. She whipped around to face him.

"You haven't told her?" She demanded. His eyes widened and although it was a miniscule moment, I caught it. The subtle shake of his head telling her to be quiet.

"Told me what?" I asked but neither of them paid any attention. She continued to glare at him and he continued to plead with his eyes.

"Told me what?" I pressed. She rounded on me then, her eyes glinting with mischief and Dave started coughing back there, really bad. And I got really worried too, but the curiosity clawing at me was much greater than the concern.

"Told you that he-"

Buzzzz. Buzzzzz.

All of us looked to the tiny device dancing wildly on the table. My phone. Damn! Mom just had to call me right now, didn't she? Grumbling under my breath I picked up my phone and excused myself out of the room.

"Hello?" I said while I heard exchange of words rapidly behind me in the room.

"Oh sweetie, I just wanted to say that we're out today and will come back a bit late."

"Oh. It's okay. I'll order pizza for dinner."

"That's fine. But do you have the keys?"

"Why would I? They're there under the pot." I whispered the last part.
