Chapter 42 - To say or not to say, that was the question.
Dave
"Look, she must have got caught up into something." Hugh said, reassuringly.
"Yeah? Like what?" I raised a brow, downing another shot. Feeling suffocated, I loosened the stupid blue tie round my neck and downed another one, the drink, whatever it was, burned down my throat, easing the knotted feeling of my heart.
If you haven't guessed.
My prom date, had ditched me.
"I don't know!"
"I should've known, she hadn't wanted to come anyway. I don't know why I even hoped she would. She always does whatever her heart wants." I said growled.
"That's not true. Yes it is. No I mean, she does, but never if it means it'll hurt anybody." He knew her well.
"Okay, Mr. Perceptive. What are you doing here anyway?" I snapped. Angry that he was right.
"I'm just trying to help you out."
"I don't need, your help. You should go and dance with your date. She's been glaring at me for the past twenty minutes. I'm starting to think she might be getting the wrong idea about us."
He glanced at the girl in pink, whose name I had forgotten by now, standing a few feet away, tapping her feet and shooting daggers at us. He gulped.
"You're right. But no more drinking this for you. You're getting tipsy. What is this anyway?"
I shrugged.
"Wasn't it meant to be a punch?" He asked sniffing it.
I shrugged.
"Well, whatever it is, I don't think it's allowed."
I shrugged.
"No. More. Drinking." He said before going to his girl. I looked around the gym turned into a ballroom. All of our friends had someone they could be here with. Even Em found a guy tolerable enough to dance with. Al waved at me, then her smile turned down. I smiled sadly shaking my head. Everyone was having the time of their lives. Enjoying as much as they could, for the last time in school. I fished out my phone.
Still, no message, no call. I had been texting her all evening. First I was worried something might have happened. Because the thought of her ditching never came to my mind. She did reply once, when my texts had gotten really concerned, saying she was fine.
After that, nothing.
"Hope you have a good night." I texted and switched off my phone, before turning away and leaving.
It's easy to be mad at Stephanie, but it's really really hard to get her out of my mind. In fact being mad, makes it worse. The drink had made me tipsy, but not enough to go home and pass out, which I would have just loved to do. The stupid, swirling thoughts banged around my head, making it extremely difficult to fall asleep. I tried watching the T.V. but the sports made me remember Greg or Cal who in turn reminded me of how much Steph loved them. Music channels made all of her comments on them ring in my ears and shows reminded me how she has watched all of them and can quote any dialogue from any scene of any series. I decided on news. They were boring enough to make me drowsy.
