WINNER in the fanfiction genre of "Writing contest for all".
It's the first day of college and Kayla couldn't be more excited. She's been dreaming about going to a music academy her whole life, and now she's finally abou...
Even though I decided to sleep until 9 AM today, I couldn't. The homework just sat there in a straight pile next to my bed, staring at me all night. I just couldn't stop myself from finish it before I'd go mad.
A quick glance at my phone reveals that it's almost 9.15 AM, which means that I really should start getting ready for going home. I told mother that I would come home this weekend, mostly because I'm certainly not used to being away from her for a long time.
But just as I'm about to start getting ready, I get a text.
------------------ From: (phone number) Heyy Kayla! Listen, I don't know if you have plans for this weekend but do you think that you could come over to Riverdale Park here in Toronto? Me and the other acoustic students are arranging a concert there and the other girl who was supposed to help with makeup got ill. So, could you help out backstage? Pleeease? ☺️☺️ /Crystal ------------------
I sigh and think about it for a while. Okay actually, I'm really thinking about what mother would think about it. Wait, how did Crystal even get my number?
------------------ From: Kayla Sure. I'm on my way 😁 ------------------
It's great that they want me to help out, but I wonder what I should say to mother... I decide to just text her that I got busy and leave it at that. When I've sent her the text I start thinking about what to wear.
After about 15 minutes I've decided to go with a red sweater, black skirt and black leggings underneath. It's a bit more confident than I'm used to but Cora was kind of forcing me to buy it at the mall yesterday.

When I'm all set I decide to take a cab to Riverdale Park. On the way there the view outside the car window is absolutely amazing. It reminds me of New York almost, where I've been a few times with my parents.
"Hey Kayla! Thanks for being here" Crystal smiles as she approaches me.
"Oh it's nothing, just thought it would be fun"
"Well, it's great to have you here. Shane, she's my new helper. Show her where the makeup/hair area is" she turns to Shane who just stood there and watched me with his weird... Look. He's probably trying to find something to tease me about.
"Whatever" he mutters and start walking towards backstage, without even looking to make sure I'm keeping up. I decide to stop wasting any more energy on this guy, so when we reach our destination I just nod at him and he disappears.
The concert starts and it's a lot of mixed music, but mostly rock. Not that it's a surprise or so but still, it would be too much with only rock songs.
"So, what do you think about the concert so far?" Trevor asks me as I'm doing his hair. He haven't said a word to me before and suddenly he's acting all nice and... Decent. Okay stop judging everyone Kayla, you don't even know the guy!
"Uhm, it's not really my area but it sounds pretty good" I smile and he smiles back. "What do you do? You play any instruments?"
"Yeah, I both sing and play the electric guitar" he proudly tells me.
"Wooow" I gasp sarcastically, causing us both to start laughing.
"Trevor, get your ass over here right now. We're up next" Shane suddenly snaps.
"Sorry, didn't mean to bother you" I tell him and he smiles a little while standing up.
"Oh, you're not bothering me at all. And I'm sorry about Shane's... Behavior"
"I'm used to it" I laugh and we say goodbye to each other. When I look at Shane, his eyes are filled with anger. I rise my eyebrows in confusion but he ignores my unspoken question. We just stare straight into each others' eyes like in some kind of a hypnosis.
"Hey Kayla, help me with these boxes?" Crystal asks, which awakes me from my state.
"Uh, of course" I smile, breaking the eye contact with Shane. When I look at him again he's still staring at me, but I guess you now could call it more of a gaze, almost. He scratches his neck when he sees that I'm noticing his "gaze" and starts walking further away from me, towards the stage.
"Hello, are you there?" Crystal asks me, and I now notice that she's standing right in front of me.
"Oh, sorry. I zoned out there for a second" I smile, and she grins as she shakes her head.
"I know what – or who – you were looking at and I must say, I really think that you and Trevor would look great together"
"Oh but... Uhm, thanks I guess" I laugh and we start carrying the heavy boxes full of wigs, makeup, clothes and god knows what. I shouldn't tell her that it was Shane who caught my eye, he's been so rude to me and it would just be weird to explain why I looked at him and stuff like that so, let her think that I looked at Trevor. It's fine.
When it's been like 15 minutes of heavy box-carrying, a rock ballad starts playing on the stage. I'm surprised to say that it's really amazing and the voice singing even better, so I decide to peek by the side of the stage to see who's singing. I'm not supposed to be there so I try not to be seen as I make my way over there.
But when I've reached the side of the stage, I discover that none other than Shane is the singer. His voice is everything... It's strong, powerful but at the same time so soft. Okay, at least now I understand how he made it into this school since his temper and mood swings are a real problem.
I decide to take a step forward to see the whole band together as they play, but it turns out to be a mistake when Shane sees me. Just when I'm about to go back behind stage again, he smiles a sarcastic smile and waves, causing EVERYONE in the audience to start staring at me. Thank you, Shane. Really.
