"Work on this piece while I prepare the next one" the teacher says and I really try my best to concentrate. It's tuesday and violin class, usually my favorite but today is different. It's not boring or anything, I'm just not feeling it.
I drag the bow across the strings which creates a loud tone. The tone is completely out of tune and I earn some glances from a few classmates wondering what the heck I'm doing. I'm kind of wondering myself.
A loud sigh escapes my lips and every person in the room stops playing and stares at me. Great job Kayla!
"Is there any problem, Kayla?" the teacher asks and I shake my head.
"Uhm, no. No problem at all, I'm just a little tired"
But all I can think about is the happiness I felt yesterday while singing. I don't know what it was, but it was something special. Something that I've never felt before, not even while playing the violin.
"Okay, just keep practicing and you'll make it"
"... Eventually" I sigh quietly as the teacher turns to another student who needs help. All I want is to give up when I feel a tap on my shoulder.
"Hey Kayla, what's up?" Cora whispers with a slightly worried look.
"Oh, hey Cora. It's nothing, just a bad day I guess"
"Bad day" she snorts. "Yeah right. Do you want to play some violin at my place after school? I would love to help"
I smile thankfully for her kindness.
"Yeah, sure. That would be very appreciated" I whisper back and she nods with a smile.
The day passes by and suddenly school is done for today. Me and Cora decided to meet by the parking at 5, about 30 minutes after school. I hurry among the hallway and enter my room and, as usual, Crystal is nowhere to be seen.
I decide to change into a pair of high waisted shorts and a white tank top. The heat outside today is overwhelming so I put up my hair into a high ponytail as well. When I check my phone to see what time it is, it's only 5 minutes left before I'm supposed to be down at the parking.
"Darn it" I sigh and grab my phone and keys to lock the door after myself. I rush down the hallway and make it just in time. Cora's walking out from her building and we wave at each other kind of awkwardly before she walks up to me.
"Heeey" she smiles. "Ready to go on the most exciting adventure in your life?!"
"Yup, as ready as I can be" I laugh and we climb into her car.
We're sitting in the car talking and I'm completely speaking my heart out. Cora is a really nice and caring person and I really appreciate having someone like her to talk to when I need it the most.
After about 40 minutes we arrive outside her house and my chin just drops to the ground. Cora looks at me and starts laughing.
"Omg! Your house... It's beautiful!" I squeal and she just continues laughing.
"Thank you so much" she says and climbs out of the car, as do I.
"Come on Kayla" Cora says, waking me up from my zombie mode. When I scan my eyes around me I realize that she's already by the front door. I start laughing and rush up to her.
Cora giggles and knocks on the big black door. It only takes a few seconds before the door opens and a man in the middle age appears.
"Hello Cora! Welcome home" he says with a big bright smile.
"Hey dad" she smiles. "This is Kayla Smith, a friend from school"
"Of course, welcome to our home Kayla" he says and shakes my hand. I thank him and we step inside.
The house is even more beautiful on the inside with top class modern furniture. It's clean, spacy and has everything I could ever dream of.
"You have a really beautiful home, mr..."
"Fields. Stefan Fields" he smiles and I nod. "But you can just call me Stefan"
Behind him a beautiful woman appears with an empty tray in her hands.
"Kayla, this is Stefans wife, Isabel" Cora says and we greet each other. She then grabs me and leads me upstairs.
Her room has a bit more character than the rest of the house but still so beautiful. Posters are covering almost all walls and a large bookshell stands beside the large bed. Several instruments are gathered in a corner and beside them a huge boombox rests peacefully.
"What? Have you never seen a room before in your life or what?" she laughs and I shake my head to get back to reality.
"Sorry, I don't know why my mind travels elsewhere all the time" I giggle and grab my violin that my teacher let me borrow. With a deep breath I start playing and after 15 minutes it still sounds awful. I sigh and put down the violin.
"Cora, if you don't mind me asking... But why did you call Stefan's wife Isabel and not mother?"
"... It's because mum died in cancer two years ago, and a year later he married Isabel"
"Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss. I didn't mean to be disrespectful"
"No it's okay, I mean it was a really tough time in our lives but we made it through" she says with a sad smile. "Or, maybe not all of us but-"
"CORA WHERE THE FU- oh, what's Kayla doing here?" Shane suddenly appears in the doorway with a furious look in his face but it changes into an evil little smirk when he sees me.
"Excuse me but why are you talking like I'm not in the room?" I ask. Oh my god, he is so ANNOYING.
He turns to me with an even bigger smirk plastered on his face, without a word, and then turns back to Cora. Asshole!
"Kayla had some problems today in violin class so we decided to practise after school, can you please leave now?" Cora says and places her hands on her waist.
"Uh, she doesn't have any problems with the violin, just lack of passion" he says, like it's the most obvious thing in the world.
"What do you mean? I love playing the violin" I defend myself, actually a bit offended by what he just said.
"You may love it all you want, but you will never play with passion. But, yesterday when you sang, that was true passion" he smiles casually before turning and disappearing. What the heck just happened?
"Did he spy on us before walking in here? He's never even seen me play before" I ask.
Cora starts laughing her ass off and I sigh.
