Hmm... I know that history never was my favorite subject in school, but this is just silly. I don't think that I've ever had a struggle at this level before, even with homework that usually doesn't take me more than 30 minutes to do. I've now worked with this stupid essay for several hours and all I've managed to produce is two sentences.
It's soon 6 PM which means that I need to get going if I want to be there on time, but then Crystal enters the room with Trevor close behind.
"Kayla, hey! What are you doing tonight?" she asks and Trevor looks at me, obviously just as interested in my answer as Crystal.
"Uhm, I'm meeting Shane at the studio"
"Shane? Shane Harte?" she asks with a surprised look on her face. Trevor looks a bit concerned for a second but then goes back to just surprised.
"Yeah, and I know what you're thinking, he's rude and all that but he's actually-"
"Kayla, I would strongly recommend you not to let him in... He will break your heart"
"What do you mean?"
"You know, we've been here for a year now and I've seen his true self. It's not pretty"
"Oh... So he broke a girl's heart then?"
"Not one... Many. He kind of doesn't stay with the same girl for long. When he's got her in bed, he simply just leave"
"... Wow. Thanks, I guess. I'll be careful"
"Good" she says with a soft smile. Trevor nods in agreement and I smile.
"Well, I should get going now or I'll be late. Bye you two" I say and they say goodbye in choir, causing me to laugh as I leave the room.
Outside the building the sunrays shine all over the schoolyard, touching every inch of it. Not a single cloud is to be seen in the sky and even though it's fall, it's pretty warm for an early evening. I stop, close my eyes and just breathe in the fresh air. It's truly like therapy for the soul.
When my phone alarm starts sounding, I open my eyes again, forced to wake up from the 'state' I was just in. I set the alarm before to signalize when the clock hit 6 PM, which it obviously has now. I decide to run the last bit to the studio and by the time I've gotten there, it's almost 6.10 PM.
"There you are" Shane says as I appear by the door to the studio he's in. "Thought you wouldn't show up for a second"
He's sitting in the middle with a guitar on his lap, same as earlier today. The walls are covered in instruments on one side, and records, posters and albums on the other side. It's really impressive.
"Guess you got lucky" I smile and as I walk through the door, he starts playing random chords on the guitar. "Wow, there are so many acoustic instruments... Like I've never seen half of them before"
He looks at me as if I'm a weird psycho or something and starts laughing. I shake my head and continue searching through the instruments.
"My parents have always pushed me into playing classical music, going to the classical department on a music academy... It's all they've ever talked about"
"Are you sure that's what YOU want?" he asks with a serious face, and I shrug.
"I don't know, to be completely honest... I mean I thought that it was what I wanted but now that I'm here in college, I'm not so sure anymore. Acoustic music is so powerful and beautiful, like... It's so different from classical music even though it's just another type, you know?" I ask and he chuckles. "Sorry if I'm confusing and all that but-"
"Come here" he says and reaches for a paper that lies on the ground beneath him. "Take this"
I grab the paper and read the text. It's lyrics for a song.
"'Let Me Know'? What kind of name is that for a song" I grin and he smiles.
"Sing it"
"What? Y-you want me to-"
"Just do it" he says and I don't even have the time to refuse because he's already started playing.
You're so beautiful and you don't know it
You're so perfect I don't want to blow it
But girl there's something that I gotta say
See lately I've been feeling paralyzed
I swear you've got me mesmerized
Stuck counting every freckle on your beautiful face
And for the first time in my life
This world feels so right
I can't hold back I'll lose my mind
I need to let you know
And every time I open my mouth I can't get the words out
I've just never given up before
My hearts is yours
My heart is yours
When I've sang the last word, he stops playing.
"Wow, your voice is... Amazing"
"Thank you" I smile and he looks pensive as I wait for his respond.
"Too bad you're not in the acoustic department"
"Oh, my parents would never agree with me going to the acoustic instead of the classical department, so I guess it's for the best"
Okay, now that I think about it, that sounded way more like a sad wish than what I meant.
"So you want to go here instead?" he grins and stands up.
"No, absolutely not, I mean it's not my style at all" I say and stand up as well, but he just looks at me like he knows that I'm lying. "Okay, I like to sing and stuff but that doesn't mean that I can just ignore what my parents think and go my own way"
"See, the thing is, Kayla... That's exactly what you can do" he says and steps closer to me, so close that I can smell his scent. I look up and straight into his green eyes feeling hypnotized.
"Hey teens, you can't be here after school hours" a janitor says who suddenly appears in the doorway, pushing me out of the hypnosis I was in. It's so strange, it has never happened to me before but this is the second time.
"Oh, I'm so sorry" I apologize and look at Shane who just stares at me. I gesture to him with my eyes that he should apologize as well, but he just grabs his guitar and walks past the janitor. I sigh and follow him out of the building.
"Really? Not even an apology?"
"Why should I? He doesn't care if I say I'm sorry, it's not like his day would get any better"
"Shane, I don't know you so well, but I do know you well enough to understand one thing. You are a great person. Kind and caring even if you don't know it yourself"
"Oh cut the bullshit, I'm not a good person and I never will, not since... Whatever"
And with that, he just walks away. Why does he always do this? The second you think that he has changed his attitude, he just pushes you away. I won't accept it. I don't know why, but I won't.
