Utau POV
"My sister's name is Candance. My birthday is May 14th." Utau mutters to herself as Kyokai took a shower before supper. Every night before going to sleep she listed off several easy to remember things about her old life. "My sister is four years old? My favorite toy is... Criby. My sister was born in spring?" She says uncertainly. "Not important. Focus." She scolds herself. "My room was barbie pink. My mother had blonde, no red hair. My father had green eyes? Criby was a stuffed elephant?" The harder she tries to remember the more blurry her memories became. It's getting harder and harder to remember. "Why? Why can't I remember. It's only been a couple months." She cries feeling frustrated. She covers her eyes with her hands. "I have to focus harder."
"I like singing, daydreaming and... and..." she lets her voice fade out. "My best friend is named Faith? Or was it Courtney? Elizibeth?"Her heart starts to pound as she gets more and more scared and tears spring to her eyes. She sucks air between her teeth to calm herself. "My favorite color is midnight purple with silver sparkles. My favorite food is shake'n'bake chicken. My eyes are light blue. I was in sixth grade. My favorite dress was green." She mutters quickly under her breath. "My cat was named... I had one or several gold fish? Did I have a dog or was it chickens." She covers her face with her pillow and screams into it frustrated. "When I grow up I want to be... what? A teacher? A nurse, a writer a reporter?" Utau looks at the ceiling defeated. "I don't remember. Why?"
Kyokai comes back into their room wrapped in a towel and drying her hair. She looks at Utau. "Are you okay?" She asks with her Indian accent.
"I'm fine." She lies and hides her face in her pillow so the younger girl can't see she's been crying.
"Okay then. Lets go." She says pulling her clothes on.
Utau nods and sits up. She faces the wall and wipes her eyes dry. Then she puts on her black boots. The two girls leave the room and walk down the hall. They get on one of the elevators with some other kids and go down seven floors to the fourth floor. There they walk into the other side of the building to the cafeteria.
"Utau!" Shin calls and trots up to her.
"Hey Shin. It's been awhile." Utau says surprised. Due to how dangerous Shin's power is he and a couple others have been put in a separate class. They aren't allowed to interact with the other classes very much. Utau hadn't seen Shin for almost two weeks as a result.
"Yeah, sorry about that. Look who is with me." He says pointing beside him as a boy wearing a black hoodie with the hood up as he catches up to him. His skin is almost paper pale and sticking out from under his hood is shocking white hair. His silver eyes seem to glow as he looks around him.
"Kami," Utau says surprised. "So you finally woke up." She smiles welcoming but he just stares at her like she's an interesting object. Her smiles fades as she becomes uncomfortable.
"I'm going on ahead." Kyokai breaks the awkward silence and keeps walking.
"Does he speak English?" Utau asks Shin. She's positive she must of met him somewhere before he ended p in a comma, but she just can't recall the memory from the black hole that sucked it up.
"Yeah, he is just being weird." Shin says and waves his hand in front of Kami's eyes. The younger boy ignores him.
"Is he going to be okay?" She asks nervously.
"Not sure." Shin replies looking uncertain.
Utau looks back at Kami who is still staring at her. Her discomfort though gives rise to irritation. Why are you staring at me! She snaps at him inside her head.
Kami smiles knowingly and finally blinks. "Largely to observe your reaction. You are a very interesting person." He says as if she spoke aloud.
"Can you read minds?" Utau asks alarmed. She really doesn't like it when people enter her head uninvited.
"Nope." He says cheerily and turns around. "Lets go get our horrible vitamin flavored supper!" He adds enthusiastically.
Utau follows Shin. "Is he always like this?" She asks.
"I hope not." Shin replies.
"Well, at least he's positive. Most of the other kids were scared or in shock." She says relieved. "Hey, Kami, how old are you?"
"I'm eight! My birthday is June 8th. Wow! I'm the same age as the date of my birthday! It's my golden year! How lucky! It's going to be the best year ever!" He chatters excitedly.
Utau looks at the strange boy confused, "He really is just weird."
"Well, at least he is adapting quickly." Shin says.
In the cafeteria the three get their slushy shakes and sit in a secluded area. Shin and Kami sit on the same side with their backs to the wall. They still sit a couple feet apart. Utau and Shin sip their shake unwillingly but Kami uses a straw to gulp the whole thing down in record time.
From there he looks around the large room as if everything and everyone is fascinating. Shin tries to make conversation but with the new addition to their group Utau isn't feeling very talkative. She stares at Kami warily.
As if sensing her thoughts Kami speaks up without even looking at her, "Don't mind me. Shin wants to talk yo you. Just pretend I'm not even here." Kami says to her.
Once again Utau feels uncomfortable and transparent. The more uncomfortable she feels the more annoyed she gets. Kami turns his gaze on her at last and smiles cockily.
"Have I upset you?" The white haired boy smirks. Utau is taken back by the almost evil expression on Kami's face. "You really don't need to pretend to be so shy. If you want to say something then say it." He continues.
"I really don't feel comfortable talking as if we're close friends. We just met." Utau mutters softly trying to keep her annoyance out of her voice.
Kami sighs like he's bored. "If you want to be that way. I thought you might be interesting, but if all you're going to do is hide behind a mask I'm not interested in talking to you." He waves her off.
Utau's annoyance turns to anger at his tone. "What is that supposed to mean?" She snaps at him.
Kami's eyes widen and he smiles happily, "There you go! Isn't it great to say what's really on your mind?" He says happily.
Utau freezes, no one had ever been able to make her angry enough to yell at them. Not even her parents. But he had done it with ease. He could see right through her. She felt like in less than fifteen minutes this boy knew more about her than anyone else in the whole world. She felt like a poorly made glass statue full of bubbles and other debris. She didn't like it. She hated it. She has never felt such a strong dislike for a person before now. She even forgets this boy is two years younger than her.
"Oops. I think I broke her." Kami laughs like something funny had happened.
She stands up quickly, "Just leave me alone." Utau hisses. The boys look at her confused. "Just go away!" She yells at him.
After a moment Kami smiles his annoying smile and nods. "Okay." He agrees. He throws the empty plastic cup in the trash and heads towards the dorms.
Shin looks at Utau concerned. "Is something wrong? You have never gotten angry like that before."
"I'm fine." She snaps at him and sits back down.
Shin cringes a little, "Are you sure? We can talk about it." Shin offers.
"I said I'm fine!" Her eyes flash as a bit of her power slips into her voice. Shin flinches at the loud word but remains silent. Utau feels bad and looks at her lap embarrassed, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have snapped at you." She apologizes.
"It is okay." He says softly.
They didn't talk for the rest of supper. With a brief goodbye they both went back to their rooms.
Alone with her thoughts she thought about Kami. She was surprised the emotion she linked to him also linked to another one of her murky memories. She pauses outside her door thoughtfully.
"I hate Kami." She says amazed. She doesn't recall ever hating anyone specific but she truly hated that boy.
