Chapter 38: Foreboding

Shin POV

At supper Shin sits with Utau and Aidan comes to sit with them. He looks at his supper with distaste. "How do you guys stand these?" He asks cringing every time he takes a small sip.

"You get used to it." Shin replies.

Utau nods and smiles apologetically, "After a couple months you shouldn't even taste it anymore." She tells him.

Shin looks up as he sees Samael's guards walk into the room. Kami is with them. The dye has been completely washed out of his hair now. They leave Kami there and he looks around dazed like he's not quite sure how he got here. He yawns and takes a few sleepy steps forward.

Shin jumps up and rushes over to Kami. He grabs his arm and pulls him out of the room. He has to find out what Samael is up to. Shin pulls Kami into a darkened hallway where they won't be heard. "What happened?" Shin asks.

Kami looks up at Shin with exhausted eyes. "Samael just wanted to test a few things. He's doing some curse testing. It's not hard. I don't have to do anything." He says and yawns.

"So he killed you over and over. How many times did you die today?" Shin asks him.

Kami looks at his fingers and counts on them quietly. "Ten times I think?" He says uncertainly. "I was shot a few times and my jugular was cut one of those times."

"You have to tell Curse. She will not allow these tests to continue." Shin tells him.

Kami waves and looks at him sleepily, "It's fine, it's fine. Tis'not like I'll die anyways." He sounds exhausted and his words are starting to run together.

Shin feels a spike of anger, "You might not die but you can still feel pain. It will destroy you sooner or later." He snaps at the younger boy.

Kami rubs his eyes, "I can take it. It happens so fast I barely feel it." Kami shakes his head to keep himself awake and leans on the wall when he loses his balance.

Utau walks up to them, "Shin's right Kami. These tests are dangerous."

Kami smiles playfully and looks at her, "Sorry, I wasn't listening. Whad'you say?" His eyes rolls up and he slumps to the ground.

"Kami!" Shin yells in surprise. He leans Kami against the wall.

"Sorry, just gonna take a nap real quick." Kami mutters and starts breathing deeply.

Utau checks his pulse and pries one of his eyes open. "He's asleep." She tells Shin.

Kami mutters something in his sleep but the only thing Shin can pick out is Kiri's name.

"He is exhausted. His curse uses alot of energy. This cannot be good for him." Shin says worriedly.

"Lets get him to his room. Tomorrow you should tell Curse what is up. These experiments are playing with fire." She tells him and picks the smaller boy up with ease.

Shin shakes his head, "I cannot. Kami and I are not under Curse's protection. She is under ours. Crossing Samael could put her in danger. So I cannot tell Curse what is going on." He tells her. "For now I will get Kiri. He can help you get Kami into bed."

"I'll go on ahead then." Utau says.

"No. Just wait here." Shin tells her. He runs back to the cafeteria and finds Kiri sitting with Kai. He has a pouting expression. He tells Kiri about Kami and leads him back to Utau. On the way Kiri grabs a shake for Kami. He hands the shake to Shin the moment he sees Kami. Utau has leaned him back against the wall. Kiri wraps his arms around Kami's shoulders.
