**Beep Beep**
My pager began flashing at me as I stood in line in the cafeteria for my coffee. 911 from Dr Hunt. I was on trauma this week and it is one of the toughest services. I ran from the line and grabbed the elevator to the ER. I ran through the double doors and made my way over to Dr Hunt.
"What is it Dr Hunt" I asked in a huff
"We've got a john doe coming in. Someone found him on the side of the road. 2 GSW's to the chest and abdomen." Owen said as he made his way out to the ambulance bay
Within 2 minutes of him updating me on the situation the ambulance came rushing in to the pit. The paramedics removed the guy from the ambulance and passed him off to us.
"Alright let's get him into trauma 2" Owen ordered as I helped him wheel the gurney inside
We went into trauma room 2 and began assessing the situation.
"Owen he's just a kid look at him. He can't be any more than 18 at the most" I said as I took a better look at the young man lying in front of us
"Alright, let's go ahead with damage control and try wake him up. But we need to get him to the OR. Dr Quinn you're taking the lead on this one" Owen said as he began packing the wounds
"Oh ok, thank you Sir" I said in surprise
It had only been a month since my first solo surgery and I had certainly never done a trauma surgery like this. We soon controlled the bleeding and managed the get the young man awake.
"Sir we need your name, can you tell us where you're from?" I asked softly
"J-J" he breathed heavily and his eyes began to flutter shut
"We just need your name so we can help you" I said a little more assertive this time as I gave his hand a supportive squeeze
"Jake Miles" he mumbled before falling unconscious once more
"Hey Dr Quinn take a look at this" Owen said as he cut open Jake's shirt "It's a tattoo, it's military. I recognize the symbols."
"Surely he can't be old enough for the military I said!" Shocked at what I was seeing
"I'll call a friend of mine and see if he can tell us anything" Dr Hunt said as he left the trauma room
I sat beside Jake and kept an eye on his SATs. Within 15 minutes Owen was back with the information we needed.
"So we have Jake Miller who joined the military a year ago. He was discharged when his lieutenant found out he lied about his age. Jake told them he was 20 when actually he had just turned 17." Owen said
"I'll page Arizona and prep him for surgery" I sighed. Poor kid.
Arizona soon arrived and when she realized the situation she became agitated and upset.
"Jamie you need to get this kid to surgery. I'm scrubbing in with you" She ordered
"Arizona right now I need you to contact his family. Come join us when you're finished but his parents need to know." I replied with a serious tone
We removed Jake from the trauma room and took him to the elevator and up to the OR floor. The scrub nurse took him in and Dr Hunt and I began to scrub in. We were gowned and gloved and made our way over to where Jake lay on the operating table.
"You've got this" Owen said supportively
I nodded in appreciation.
"10 blade" I held out my hand as the scrub nurse handed me the scalpel
