"Look at him Arizona" I whispered in awe as I watched my little boy fast asleep in his crib
Arizona walked up the hall towards me and wrapped her arms around my waist as we took in the sight of our beautiful little boy together. His three months in the hospital were finally up and we brought him home yesterday. I only needed to stay in the hospital for 3 weeks until I recovered from my injuries. It was hard being at home without my little man but I had constant updates and pictures from Arizona. Whoever the sperm donor was he must have had blonde hair because already I could see tufts of blonde growing on Kayden's tiny head. I was so glad because now he would bare resemblance to both Arizona and I. Even though a babies eye color can change, it was already evident he was going to have blue eyes. Maybe he was going to look more like Arizona than me!
"I think he's going to look like you babe" I voiced my thoughts as Arizona rested her head on my shoulder
"It was your egg wasn't it?" she questioned
"Yeah, I know but whoever owns that sperm has some pretty strong genes" I joked
"Well at least a resemblance will give me some form of claim to my son" she said as she snuggled closer to my neck
"hey" I stood away from her grasp and turned to face her, wrapping my arms around her waist now "Don't say that" I frowned
"Say what?" she asked confused
"Kayden is just as much your son as he is mine, regardless if I carried him or who he looks like or whatever! Don't ever doubt that Arizona" I reassured her
I know it was hard on her. I know she lost a child when she was with Callie and all she ever wanted was to carry her own baby. But I was going to make damn sure she knew Kayden was just as much hers as he is mine.
"I love you" she whispered as she stretched up to kiss me "Now you need to get some rest, you've been watching Kayden like a hawk, it's time to let this momma bear take over. I've got a week off, so you can stay off your feet, you hear me?" she warned playfully
"Yes ma'am" I smiled as I began making my way towards the living room, but quickly turning on my heels back to Arizona to kiss her gently on the cheek "And I love you too baby"
Although I had returned to work last month I still had some aching in my injuries, mainly where my leg was crushed, I was off the crutches but my foot was still pretty weak. I wasn't scheduled for any overly long surgeries, which was pretty helpful. And to top it all off, I passed my boards and was now in my fellowship year. Just one more year and I will finally be an attending. It was such a relief to have all my exams behind me, this year I will be doing nothing but Cardio Thoracic surgery, which was heaven. However, there was still one small problem, we still have no head of Cardio. Out of respect to Maggie the board decided to leave the position open for a month. It's been almost four months and they're still finding it hard to hire the right candidate.
"He's out cold" Arizona sighed happily as she landed herself on the sofa beside me, waking me from my thoughts
"Thank you" I smiled as I leaned over and placed my head on her shoulder
"Are you working tomorrow?" she asked casually
"Yeah I'm in early, I've gotta stay late too if that's okay? If you need me just call me and I can leave early" I replied
"I'll be fine, I'm just worried about you, are you sure you're ready for these longer surgeries?" she asked concerned
I sat up to face her before replying, "Arizona, I'm perfectly fine, don't be worrying about me okay, enjoy your time with Kayden, I'm a big girl, I can take care of myself" I smiled reassuringly at her as I looked directly into her eyes
"I'm always going to worry about you, I love you too much not to care" she whispered
I placed my forehead against hers and took her hands into mine.
"I don't deserve you Arizona Robbins" I mumbled huskily against her soft breath
"Then earn me" she whispered seductively
At that I lost my control. Arizona and I had just barely kissed these last three months, with me recovering and the both of us constantly awake at night watching over Kayden in hospital, we were exhausted and as a result our love life suffered. We finally had some time to ourselves and we were going to use it to our advantage.
I could feel her hand slowly gliding down my pants as her warm touch sent shivers through my body. I hadn't felt her touch in so long, it was almost a foreign feeling to me. I leaned into her body as I kissed her lips hungrily, with more want and passion than I had in what felt like forever. Her hand traced circles in places that made it hard for me to concentrate as I pulled her body immeasurably closer and closer to mine as my hands roamed her body, tugging at the hem of her t-shirt, indicating for her to take it off. As things began to heat up, I heard the front door close.
"Hey Jay, I just- holy shit get a room you two" Meredith entered the living room and almost jumped out of her skin
"This is our house Mer" I growled
She laughed as she watched Arizona move awkwardly away from me as I rolled my eyes at her inconvenience.
"I'll make some coffee" Arizona said as she stood up from the sofa
"Seriously Mer, you don't knock anymore?" I sighed, frustrated
"Jamie, when was the last time I ever knocked?" She laughed as she shook her head at my reaction
"True" I mumbled "Sorry for overreacting, Arizona and I haven't had a minute to ourselves ever since before my boards." I sighed
"Get used to it kid, that little guy is going to take over your whole life. By the way, how is the little man?" she asked
"He's great, he's sleeping well and eating everything" I gushed
"Listen, why don't I take him off your hands for one night? Give you two some alone time." she smiled
"Mer, I don't know" I hesitated "He's only been home since yesterday and-" I began before Meredith cut me off
"Look, I know you're worried about him Jay, and believe me that never goes away. And I know I'm no pediatric surgeon but I am a doctor and I survived three kids already, I think I can handle the little guy. Just pack up some stuff and I'll take him with me for the night. It's a once in a lifetime offer kiddo, grab it while you can" she joked
"Okay sure, Arizona and I need some time together. It'd be good for us" I nodded in agreement
Just then, Arizona walked in and handed us each a mug of coffee as she sat down beside me.
"Hey babe, Mer is going to take Kayden tonight" I informed her
"Oh, you don't have to do that Mer, honestly!" Arizona said politely, but I could see she wanted some time alone, just as much as I did.
Even though Kayden was only home two days, having a kid in hospital was exhausting, even though there were nurses taking care of him from time to time, Arizona did most of the work. The mental and emotional exhaustion was almost worse than the physical side of it. Not to mention the fact that both of us were working again. We just needed a minute.
"Seriously Arizona, it's no problem. It's only one night and I'm not working tomorrow so you can collect him whenever you want" Meredith smiled
"Thanks Mer, we really appreciate this" I said gratuitously "I'll go pack his stuff"
I left the room and began packing a bag for Kayden with his diapers and baby formula and some spare baby grows. I soon had him ready to go and brought him out to Meredith's car and tucked him into his car seat. I waved Mer off and watched as she drove down the street with Kayden. I walked back inside and shut the door behind me as I saw Arizona standing in the hall.
"Now I have you all to myself" I grinned wickedly as I pinned her against the wall, pulling her t-shirt off in the process "Now where was I?" I mumbled into her ear as I planted kisses down her neck
