In the practice of medicine, change is inevitable. New surgical techniques are created, procedures are updated, levels of expertise increase. Innovation is everything, nothing remains the same for long. We either adapt to change, or we get left behind

Change; we don't like it, we fear it, but we can't stop it from coming. And it hurts to grow, anybody who tells you it doesn't is lying. But here's the truth: The more things change, the more they stay the same. And sometimes, oh, sometimes change is good. Sometimes change, is, everything.

"Alright Residence, welcome to your 4th year" Doctor Webber said as he stood half way up the main stairs of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital "This year will be the hardest, most challenging year of your careers. Now you will need to start thinking hard about which specialty you will take on next year. Good luck"

"I can't believe we've been here almost 4 years" Rose turned to me, excitement evident in her eyes

"It's been one hell of a residency" I nodded in awe as I looked at the building that surrounded me

"You can say that again" she nodded in agreement

I sighed as I looked around me. So much had happened within these walls in the last four years. I had my heart broken, more than I'd like to admit. I met some of my closest friends. I met the love of my life. That's what she is, the absolute love of my life and I put her through absolute hell and here we are 3 years on.

"Hey Quinn we need you in the pit there's been a car pile up on the freeway with multiple victims coming in" Dr Hunt instructed as he walked at a furious pace towards the ER

"Yes sir" I replied, following hot on his heels

We arrived into the trauma room only to be greeted by crazy scenes. Doctors whizzing about, people crying and screaming, blood everywhere. God this is what I lived for.

After that thought it was like the rest of the world didn't matter. That's what I loved most about my job, no matter what was going on in your life, nothing mattered once you stepped into the path of a trauma, or the silence of an OR. Your adrenaline spikes, your heart beat thumps in your ears and blocks out any unnecessary sound.

"Quinn over here" Karev nodded towards a patient he was treating

"6 year old Katie Bryce, pulmonary edema, with multiple body fractures." Karev informed me as he began to work on stabilizing the child "Dr Shepherd has already assessed her and there are no obvious head traumas. Dr Pierce will meet us in the OR"

"Hey Katie, my name is Jamie, I'm going to help you get better okay?" I smiled as I looked into the girl's terrified eyes, trying my best to calm her

As soon as Katie was stable enough to be moved we brought her to the elevator and up to the OR floor. Alex and I scrubbed in while Maggie waited in the OR for us.

"10 blade" Maggie said softly as she held out her hand for the scalpel

"Alright Quinn I want you to get a good look at this. This procedure is a lot trickier on smaller lungs, however, Katie is young and healthy which means she will heal a lot faster than most people." Maggie said positively "We've gotta drain this excess fluid while trying to avoid putting excess pressure on her heart"

I nodded along as I watched Maggie inspect Katie's lungs. I began to suction the excess fluid, watching as Katie's lungs seemed to be returning to normal.

The monitors began beeping like crazy as her SATs went haywire. Katie's pulse began to race and her heart was soon under extreme pressure.

"What the hell? Dr Pierce what happened?" I questioned through the surgical mask
