"I can't wait, combat training is the best, you know? It just makes me feel so powerful," Javi rambled as we walked to school. I did my best to pay attention to what he was saying, but my head was in the clouds. As always.
Cassi hadn't told me why she had been made at me yet, but I had a feeling that I was forgiven. With her geninuine laughter at my expense yesterday, and her flirtatious smile before she left, I figured that she couldn't be too mad.
"I mean, last year I did okay and all, but thi--" Suddenly Javi stopped walking and grabbed my arm. I came back to reality and glanced at him, confused. He was looking straight ahead.
Then I realized someone was screaming. I followed the sound of the screaming, and when I found the source, my heart almost stopped.
Two street Authorities were beating a boy-- no older than 7-- on the street, where everyone could see.
I noticed right away what the kid had done wrong, he was wearing a medium blue instead of our City's prideful navy blue.
I wanted to look away but I couldn't, it was like a bad hoverbus accident. There was just so much blood.
The two Authorities were hitting him with long, metal chains that they carried around. They didn't use the chains often, they usually used an injector to make the person unconscious instantly. They would then take them into private if they were in need of any pain.
"Let's just go," I heard my brother mutter under his breath. I nodded as he pulled me away.
I squeezed my eyes shut to prevent the tears threatening to fall. Why him? He was a child. He didn't know any better. If anything, blame the parents.
My sadness and empathy quickly turned to anger. What was wrong with those Authorities? It felt sick to me that they were even considered 'Authorities'. They didn't deserve to have authority.
By the time Javi and I got to school, all I could think about was that kid. He'd have scars for the rest of his life.
I saw Cassi sitting in the same spot as yesterday, right next to Lesse or Lexington or whatever her name was. I knew Cassi was still planning on using her anger on me, I didn't really care at the moment, though. I loved her, really, but now wasn't the time to mend our friendship.
Mr. Gitti smiled at me once I entered the doorway.
"Good morning, Kara," he said sweetly. Honestly, I didn't want to deal with him either.
"Morning," I mumbled grimly.
I glanced over at Cassi again. She was frowning at me. When we locked eyes, I saw her get up from her seat and start to walk over to me.
"What's wrong?" She said bluntly and sat down in the seat next to me. As if she hadn't been prepared to abandon me for the day 60 seconds ago.
I sighed. I told her the first thing that came to mind.
"Cass, have you ever heard of the saying, 'Everyone has a little bit of "I want to save the word" in them?"
She nodded. "Yeah, and it ends with, 'but it's okay to only save one person'. So cute. And kind of romantic, don't you think?"
I ignored her comments. "Well, Cass, I think I'm going to save the world," I declared with confidence.
She laughed.
