"Okay, that couch is so not comfortable," Cassi complained for the googolplexianth time.
I shot her an icy look before turning back to Lake. "Look, we have to do something quickly. Time is running out!"
"Time goes on forever, sweetheart."
With a roll of my eyes, I shoved him lightly and walked away from him. Cassi had migrated to the bedroom, so I followed her there. She was looking through Lake's closet when I entered. Her eyes darted my way before returning to the section of clothes.
"These are all awful clothes," she murmered while taking out a distasteful blue sweater.
I smiled and took a few steps closer to her. "I know. It's been extremely hard on me."
A bright laugh escaped her mouth before she threw the sweater to the ground and turned my way. She had a half-hearted smile on her face.
"I think we should talk," I whispered. Her smile fell and her eyes hardened.
She nodded. "I agree."
With a long sigh, I plunked down onto the bed and patted the open space next to me. She locked eyes with me for a second, then sat down beside me.
I turned my head towards her. "Cass, I--"
"Wait. I need to talk to first," her voice cut through mine. My mouth was frozen open. I quickly closed it and nodded her along. She continued, "Kara, I feel like I don't even know you anymore. We used to be best friends! Now you're just... You're a stranger, Kars."
I let silence settle around us for a few moments. I finally murmered, "I'm sorry, Cass. I had to keep all of this away from you-- to protect you." My eyes looked up into hers. "You mean too much to me, Cassi."
Her chest arose deeply. Silence. More silence.
Then finally, "I just want to help you." Her dark eyes were glaring into my light ones with an intense stare.
"Well, you don't have a choice now," I muttered.
Her lips drew into a thin line. "Just please tell me what's going on, Kara."
I frowned, but explained most of it to her anyhow. "Well, it started about 70 days ago. Lake and I decided that we wanted to do something about this... cruel society. That's why we met up every night, to discuss our plans."
Cassi's mouth had been hanging open since the first sentence.
I gulped and continued, "We didn't think it would happen so fast. But they came for both of us. T-they ki... kil...," I struggled to say the phrase 'killed my parents'. It wasn't true to me yet.
Her soft hands came into contact with mine. She squeezed them tightly and met my eyes with despair. "I'm sorry," she said.
I formed a fragile smile and mouthed 'thank you'.
Without a single word, she leaned in and brought me in for a indicative hug. It was enough to tell me that she cared about me. That I could trust her.

"I'm not sleeping on that forsaken couch again," Cassi mumbled when I told her I was going to bed.
"Hey! It's not that bad," Lake called from inside the bedroom.
Cassi gave me a glare before taking a pillow off of the couch, and throwing it at my face. It hit me with a 'pmpfh'.
