I groaned upon awakening. I really did not want to go to class today. After Lake and I's fight, I didn't know what I was going to do when I saw him again. What if he acted weird? Cassi would definitely notice. What would I tell her?
Eventually, I got up and got dressed. I went for a simple white T-shirt and dark navy blue jeans. Everything was so simple here, just blue and white. No variation, no color. Some people might find comfort in that, but I just found it restricting.
Javi seemed to pick up on my bad mood immediately.
"Hey sis, you okay? You look like you actually want to die. Or that you're already dead," he teased. I rolled my eyes.
"Well, I apologize on behalf of myself and the rest of the world for not being in the happy-go-lucky mood you seem to be in," I snapped. He snorted but didn't deign to respond.
After our 6:00:00 meal was over, I felt the anxiety deep in my stomach. Lake's exasperated green eyes and rough facial expressions haunted my thoughts.
I said a quick 'bye' to my parents, and left without Javi. He quickly caught up to me, though, on the sidewalk. We then walked in silence.
Cassi joined us once we passed her house. She looked happy enough until she saw my seldom look.
Her eyebrows furrowed. "You okay there, Kars? You're green."
I rolled my eyes, and told her, "I'm fine," I debated on what to tell her before finally continuing, "I'm just frustrated. I can't seem to understand this one Government concept, and I'm not looking forward to class today." I figured that would do the trick.
Cassi gave me a sympathetic look and nodded. "I understand. Boy, I wish I had a tutor every night, though."
I weakly laughed. She seemed relieved to hear me laugh and laughed along with me.
"Hey, look, it's Zak," Javi said and nudged me with his elbow. Ever since the dance Zak and I shared, Javi and Cassi started to think we were a thing.
Zak smiled when he noticed me and waved. I couldn't bring myself to smile back, but I waved at him. I didn't like him like that, but he seemed to think I did.
My small group approached our class. Javi and Cassi went inside, while Zak stopped me to talk.
"Hey, Kara," he said in a breath.
"Hi, Zak," I responded awkwardly. I wasn't in the mood, but I didn't want to be rude either.
He gave me a wide smile. Zak grabbed my wrist and led me inside the class. I felt my heart rate speed up as I entered. I avoided my instructor.
Zak led me into the front of the room. The class was pretty full, and we still had a few minutes left until the buzz went off. I looked at Zak nervously, kind of afraid for what he was going to do.
He gave me a smile before turning to the class. He cleared his throat and said, "Um, excuse me?"
The class quieted and he smiled. "Okay, so, since class doesn't start for a few minutes, I can't get into trouble, right, Mr. Gitti?" Zak looked over at Lake with his eyebrows raised. I didn't bother to look behind me at Lake's expression.
"I guess not," I heard an all-too familiar voice mumble. Zak looked back at me and gave me a wide grin. In front of the whole class, he went down on one knee. My heart nearly stopped.
