"So, do you think that guy is attractive?" Cassi nodded at a Year 15 guy while spooning mashed potatoes into her mouth.
I hit her arm. "Cassi! He's, like, a child."
She rolled her eyes and said, "He's only two years younger than us. You're so overdramatic." She pointed her spoon at me. "You know, I'm going to figure out who it is-- with or without your help."
I shook my head and laughed. Cassi was trying to figure out who I "liked". She said I was being overly giddy and romantic, and when she asked if it was a guy, apparently I didn't say 'no' quick enough.
"Is it Dylon? I guess he's kind of cute. I heard that Lesse likes him, though, so watch out."
I grinned and shook my head again. I couldn't exactly say that she was wrong, lately I had been having kind of, slightly, really annoying feelings. I'd never tell her on who, though.
"Ugh, if you're not going to tell me, can I set you up with someone? I heard the Zak likes you."
I winced, remembering his anxious look in the training room.
"Cassi, chill, I don't like anyone!" I laughed at my best friend and threw a pea at her.
She stuck her tongue out at me. "I'm just trying to help you get some romance in your life, Kars. Trust me, you need it. Plus, plenty of guys like you."
I shook my head. "Where do you get all of this information? Like, who needs newsgrams when you have Cassi Broiks."
She laughed and shrugged. "Around, I guess. I mean, the Zak thing was obvious. And Dylon has had a thing for you since Year 5. Kars, please give me something."
"You're so needy," I joked, "besides, meal is almost over."
"We have 10 minutes. That's more than enough time."
"Enough time to do what?" A musical voice from behind us said. I turned in my seat. Lake was smiling at us. I had gotten used to calling him Lake in my head, so I stuck with it, even at school. Obviously aloud I called him Mr. Gitti, but mentally he was just Lake.
Cassi didn't censor herself at all in front of the teacher. "Enough time for Kara to get some romance in her life."
Lake snorted and raised an eyebrow at me. I rolled my eyes.
"Really? Wow, Miss Xiver, I'd never take you to be the romantic type," Lake laughed.
"That's because I'm not," I mumbled, "and she's trying to change that." I pointed a fork at Cassi. She held her hands up in surrender.
"Hey, one day you're going to die alone, and you're going to think, 'Wow, I really should've listened to Cassi. Man, I miss her and her two kids, and very attractive husband.'"
Lake laughed from behind us. I smacked her arm.
"There is that courting in a few days. Are you two going to that?" Lake asked. A courting was basically what they used to call a dance-- which honestly sounded much cooler.
"Of course! How could I forget?" Cassi gasped and put her hands to her mouth. I stifled a giggle because of how excited she was. Only Cass, I thought. "Mr. Gitti, could you excuse us early, please?" She said innocently, dragging out the 'e' in please.
He looked at his watch and sighed. "I guess."
Cassi squealed and jumped up from her seat. I did the same, except in a much slower, sadder manner.
Cassi went over to a table of guys. I was about to unwillingly follow her, when I felt a hand on my arm.
"Hey," Lake said with a smile, "promise me you won't mindlessly follow Cassi over there? I don't want you to end up with an awful date." He laughed, but behind the laugh, he was serious.
I gave him a reassuring smile and a signature eye roll. "Yes, dad, I promise not to get into trouble," I sarcastically said.
Lake grinned and gently let go of my arm.
The buzz went off to end lunch, and I saw Cassi walking towards me with a huge smile on her face.
"Guess who just got a date to the courting?!" Cassi more stated than asked.
I raised my eyebrows and grinned at her. "Hmm, I wonder who, upon minutes of finding out about the courting, managed to get a date? Well, galaxies, I can only think of Miss Cassi Broiks."
She hit my arm and laughed.
We came to a stop outside of AC. "So, who's the lucky guy?" I probed. I saw a hint of red on her cheeks.
"Zex," she whispered. I gave her a smile and nodded. Zex was a guy who she's had a thing for awhile now. He was moderately attractive and pretty nice, I was genuinely happy for her.
"That's great, Cass! You'll have so much fun," I said cheerfully while entering the class. I saw Cassi giggle and look away, Zex was staring at her.
Young love, I thought, wonder what that's like. I glanced over at Lake. He was sat back smiling at his gramlet.
Cassi looked over at me with a shocked expression. "What do you mean I'll have fun? You're going too! And you will have just as much as I will, if not more."
I grunted. "Yeah, find me someone to go with and we'll see."
Her eyes widened and I suddenly realized my mistake. It was Cassi, she'd find me a date within seconds.
"What are my limits?" She declared, and I knew there was no getting out of it. I sighed and considered it for a second.
"No Zak. No Year 15s. No Dylon, either. I don't need another enemy," I said, glancing over at Lesse.
Cassi sighed. "Okay, that really limits things, but I can make it work."
The buzz went off and we sat down, not before Cassi made her way to three guys, though.
"None of them are free," she explained once she sat down. "Otherwise I would already have you a date, my friend."
I rolled my eyes and thought over how ridiculous it all was. After class, I'd talk about boys with Cassi, and then overthrowing our government with Lake.
And then I'd go home, maybe think about overthrowing the government some more, then sleep. I'd probably either dream of myself being queen, or about Lake.
I'd been dreaming about him a lot recently, much to my dismay.
