Today in combat training we were picking our partners. My first pick was going to be a guy named Maxt. He was a pretty chill guy-- a comedian at heart. And he was at my strength level.
We had fought each other a few times and the wins have been split pretty evenly. They always end with us joking around, though.
"Bet you I'll win, Miss Xiver," he smirked.
I rolled my eyes. "Okay, Mr. Overconfident, we'll see," I said.
He scoffed. "I'm the best around. Didn't you hear?"
"Nope, I've only heard about your small-- whoops, not Authority-appropriate."
He threw his head back and laughed, then proceeded to throw a punch in my face.
I smiled at the memory and looked over to Maxt. He was leaning against the wall talking to Zak. Gross, Zak. Maxt looked up and smiled at me, gesturing me over to him and Zak.
I walked over to them. "Hey, Maxt," I said, refusing to acknowledge Zak.
Zak rolled his eyes. "See you later, Maxt," he said before walking off in a different direction.
"I wonder what his problem is," Maxt said humorously. I raised an eyebrow, but then just nodded.
"So, we going to fight today or what?" Maxt teased, nudging me with his elbow.
I rolled my eyes and glanced over at the clock. Class would start in 30 seconds.
"Yeah, okay. We'll see," I mused before looking around to find Lake.
He was in the center of the room, ready to teach.
"Okay, guys and girls. Today, because it's the first day you choose, the choosing order will be going in reverse alphabetical order. Based on your first name, of course. Next time it will be the opposite, and after it will be by last name. Etcetera. First up is Zex," Lake finished and looked over at Zex.
I winced. There was nobody I hated more than Zex, he broke my best friend's heart and harassed me. He should be in captive, the Authorities should've taken him away. Harassment wasn't taken as seriously by them as wearing the wrong type of pants.
"Hmm, I choose Kara." My heart dropped as I looked up to Zex's smirking face. He laughed once he saw my nervous face, which quickly made me nerves go away. They were replaced by anger, violence. Zex was stronger than me, but I was going to beat him. One way or another, I thought.
Lake frowned for a second but then moved on to Zak. I refused to make eye contact with Zex, instead I casually chatted with Cassi-- acting like everything was okay.
"So, have you gotten your partner yet?" Cassi asked me, she obviously hadn't been paying attention.
"Yeah," I said through gritted tetth, "Zex is my partner."
I heard her gasp and turn to me with her big brown eyes. "Really? I'm going to punch that kid, I swear," she murmered.
I smiled a little, it felt nice to know she'd stick up for me at seconds notice.
"Thanks, but I think I can do that myself. In fact, I think I'm going to do that in about 30 seconds," I told her, looking at the whistle already prepared in Lake's mouth.
