With a loud slam, the door busted open. I looked up from my gramlet with a mere raised eyebrow.
A very furious Maxt was standing in front of me.
He marched up to my desk and slammed his hands down onto it. "What do you think you're doing?"
I narrowed my eyes at him and shook my head. "I don't know what you mean. You should stop yelling. I will get you disposed, Mr. Handon."
"You've conned your way into this position. I still don't understand how, but I know it was evil. Like you," he hissed and straightened his posture. His jaw was clenched and his usual fun, lifeful eyes were cold and soulless.
"You don't know anything," I whispered. My hands were gripping so tightly onto my gramlet, they were starting to turn a nice shade of frosty white.
He let out a toneless laugh, before returning to the faceless Maxt he was seconds prior. "This is so dumb. You took away my father's job. Being President... It was his dream, you know. And how dare you take that away from him? With a few threats and empty promises, you get it all."
My blood was boiling and my breaths were becoming heavy and irregular. He didn't understand. I was doing this for him, for everyone in this forsaken world. "I gave up so much to do this. I need this so much, more than your father ever would have, Maxt. I'm going to make a change. Do something good in what little and insignificant time I have on this planet."
"What you're doing is evil, Kara. I don't know you," he said. I was avoiding his eyes, but I could still feel them burning holes into me.
"No, no you don't. You know the girl who constricted to society's rules, despite the fact that she was dying inside."
A phantom of a smile flickered upon his face. "And what about your friends? Javi? Your parents? How do they play into all of this?"
With a jolt, I was out of my chair at the mention of my parents. Without answering his antagonizing questions, I pulled out my comm. I tapped on one of my Authority guards who I couldn't bother to learn the name of, and held the comm up to my ear-- all the while making intense eye contact with Maxt.
A small beep came through, and I didn't waste anytime. "I need Maxt Handon out of my sight immediately. I want him killed as soon as possible."
Maxt's face dropped. The rosy tint on his face from the burst of anger faded into a pale ghost. "Kara, please, you can't. We're friends. Remember?"
"On it, Miss President. I'll be there immediately," the emotionless Authority voice said through the comm.
I smacked the comm down and glared at the boy. "We're not friends. We never were."
Disbelief, mixed with hurt, scattered across his features. "You can't be serious, Kara. Was what we had really all a ploy?"
I nodded and calmly settled back into my leather chair. "You want to know where Cassi Broiks, my supposed best friend, is right now?"
"I don't think I do," he breathed.
"She's in a jail cell right now. Along with our beloved instructor, Mr. Lake Gitti," I told him coyly. "They were all just pawns. Will you ever be able to accept that?"
His chest was rising and falling with overstatement. "No, I won't. Galaxies, Kara, do you have no heart? I think you do, you're just too afraid to admit it. As much as I dismayed it, I saw how you looked at him. You loved him, probably more than anyone else in that class. Kara, when will you--"
