"Shut up!" I whispered angrily into Lake's ear. We were pressed against the side of a house. The world around us was a deep blue due to the lateness of the day. Or, rather, the early-ness of the next day.
The City was dead quiet, yet Lake had decided it was a good time to tell me about how stars were made.
'I don't care,' I had told him.
'A little education never hurt anyone,' he replied stiffly.
"We have to get inside this house," I whispered so low, even I had a hard time hearing my own words.
Smartly, Lake just nodded rather than starting up a conversation. I grabbed his hand and carefully tiptoed to the backyard of the house-- where, hopfully, there would be a back door.
We turned the sharp corner. My eyes were immediately drawn to the clear glass door. I threw Lake a grin and started to saunter towards it.
I froze. There were unmistakable footsteps coming from inside the house. Immediately turning on my heel, I ushered Lake back to the side of the house.
"What's going on?" Lake whispered.
"Shhh!"
We glued ourselves to the walls of their house and listened carefully. I heard the 'whoosh' of a glass door being slid open. Wincing, I scooted further away upon hearing shoes touching grass.
"Um. Who's there?" A slightly recognizable voice called out. My eyebrows furrowed. The voice was famaliar for sure, I just couldn't place it.
I breathed slowly. In and out. In and out. I was afraid my pounding heart would be the cause of the person hearing us. Or even worse, an Authority hearing us.
"I know there's people here. I saw you two from my window," the voice quivered. My heart sped up even more-- it raced at a speed I hadn't thought was possible and was definitely not healthy. The voice was female and sounded young. It held a tone of confusion and fear. If we were caught, it would probably be easy to manipulate her.
"What do we do?" Lake mouthed at me.
I glanced into the backyard for a second and then back at Lake's worried face. "Follow my lead," I whispered.
I meandered slowly and carefully into the backyard. Praying to the universe, I turned the corner in hopes the she wasn't facing us.
She wasn't. I slowly exhaled in relief, tiptoeing closer to her. Her white nightgown looked grey in the shadows of the night, and her honey hair seemd to glow against the dark.
I took one last step and was close enough to touch her without her turning around. She was glancing around, but never turned. I took a single step closer, then grabbed her small body with my right arm. With my left hand on her mouth, I was able to muffle the screaming.
Lake was already in front of me, sliding the glass backdoor open. I pulled the struggling child inside of her house. Once I heard the door click shut, I removed my hand from her mouth. She wouldn't risk waking up her parents.
"W-who are y-you?" She stammered.
"If you tell anyone about us, I will not hesitate to take you away from your family," I hissed. My threats were fairly empty. The girl was no older than ten and I wasn't too keen on child abduction.
The girl sniffled and nodded politely. I took in our surroundings. It was a typical early 4000's home with a metallic kitchen and a glassy living room. The family was average.
