"Just let me go," I called out to the empty space in a moment of desperation. Silence greeted me as a response.
I struggled against my metal bands yet again. Needless to say, they had not gotten any weaker.
"Greon, we had a deal. Let me go now."
Silence. Darkness.
With a loud groan, I tilted my head against the chair. This was it, I thought. I'm going to die in a musty, dingy room with shadows as the only things to grieve me.
Then-- was that a door? My eyes darted up. There was a soft swoosh of a sliding door from behind me.
Someone stumbled into the room and fell. I could tell because they mumbled a few words and yelped an, 'ouch!'.
"You can go home tomorrow, our lovely Queen. I think you should spend some time with this guy. He is family, after all." Greon's voice wasn't distorted or muffled this time. My gut clenched in disgust.
The door slid shut with a loud click. The room was left alone with myself and the foreign man.
"Um, what? What's going on? Who are you?" The nostalgic and absolutely beautiful voice of my brother said. Hope spurted into my chest. Upon hearing his voice, I tried-- and clearly failed-- to jump out of my seat and hug him. The bands sharply cut into my shoulders and chest.
"Javi!" I yelled, overwhelmed with my own joy.
There was a slight pause. Then, "Kara?"
"Yes! Jav, it's me. Oh, galaxies above, I thought I'd never see you again. You have no idea--"
My rambling was cut off with an awkward and sudden embrace from my brother. I could only see a dark shadow in the room looming over me. His hands were on my shoulders and he head was near my face.
"Kara, I honestly thought you were dead," he whispered. His voice cracked slightly at the word 'dead'. I felt a sharp shard of glass being stabbed into my heart.
I sighed and let myself relax. Javi was here. He was okay, and we were together.
"I thought they were going to kill you," I told him.
"Who? The old fat dude? Kars, he acts all tough, but I could've sworn I saw him crying a few days ago."
I choked out a laugh with tears glittering at my eyes. "That's not funny! He threatened to kill you!" I criticized, yet there was a clear smile in my voice.
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever. Let's just focus on the fact that we're both here."
I nodded. "Yeah. Okay."
A few seconds of silence passed. It wasn't the ear-piercing silence from before he came, now it was a soft, comfortable silence. It was exactly what I needed to start mending my heart, something of which I felt had been stabbed too many times in the span of a two hundred days. Figuratively, obviously.
"Kara?" Javi broke the quietude. "Do you know why we're here?"
I pursed my lips and stumbled through lies in my head to tell him. I quickly figured that he'd soon find out who I was, anyway.
"Well, I don't really know how to say this but..." My voice cut off as my thoughts hesitated. Did I tell him everything? Or just pick and choose?
