My family was sat at our table for the 6:00:00 meal. It's our first meal of the year, I thought, but didn't dare speak aloud. It was frowned upon to make the new year anything special. Unprofessional, really.

Still, though, I was excited. I loved new years because they felt so fresh, you know? As if something could've changed overnight. Likely enough, nothing did. We were still under strict control by our government. Kids were still sad. Families still didn't know each other.

My brother and I got new instructors this year, which was a plus. When we were younger, we'd get a new instructor every year, but the Authorities of our City ran low on people willing to teach. Now we got a new instructor every three years.

I wasn't too sad to leave behind my old instructor-- M. Pello. I had a nagging feeling that she didn't like me very much. Nonetheless, she adored my brother, Javi, and he was torn about leaving her.

"Do either of you know who your new instructor is going to be?" My mother broke our long silence in smooth question. Her voice was beautiful, lighter than air and melodious, but it lacked passion or any sort of emotion towards her family.

"I heard that he's a guy. New, too. This is his first year," mumbled Javi.

My parents nodded, deemingly uninterested in the conversation. Silence. Silent seconds were always longer than conversial seconds. After about 1,000 seconds or so, it was the time for Javi and me to leave for Academy. My parents gave us their quick 'goodbye's and we were out the door.

"Do you think the new instructor will be okay?" I whispered to my brother. With the extreme strictness of the government, I was always cautious with Authorities. Sometimes they were fairly laid-back, other times not so much.

Javi shrugged. "I just hope he likes me like M. Pello did. I got easy 100's because of her."

I rolled my eyes. He knew the only reason she liked him was because she fancied him-- completely inappropriate and unprofessional.

Javi let out a loud laugh-- like he knew what I was thinking. I frowned. Javi had a laugh like my mother's voice, light and beautiful. It wasn't long before I grinned back at him.

After walking for nearly 1,000 seconds, we were right outside of our BC (Beginning Classrom). Javi noticed some of his friends behind us and immediately broke apart from me to go over to them. You abandoned me! I'd tell him later.

I inhaled a deep breath and opened the door.

The first thing I noticed was that there were only two other people in the room. One lonely boy who I hardly recognized, and the instructor.

My eyes widened when I saw him-- the instructor. He was actually good-looking, a trait that wasn't common at all amongst teaching positions. Tagging onto that, he was clearly young. A vague memory of my brother telling me it was the instructor's first year came to mind. If it truly was his first year, the man was only 18.

It took about 30 seconds of me staring at him for him to gaze up and notice me. Our eyes locked for a second. It brought me shivers, his eyes were a vivid green that seemed to just electrocute. My eyes darted to the floor as I quickly made my way towards a seat in the back of our large class.

A few seconds later my brother marched in with his abundantly large group of friends. They were loud and bright-- the few people in the room were immediately drawn to their aura. Mentally, I sighed. Why couldn't I be like that? Bold, noticeable, outgoing.

"Hello, sir. Mr...," Javi glanced at the instructor's name tag, "L. Gitti." L. Gitti looked up and gave him a smile.

"You can call me Mr. Gitti," he told my brother. His expression was cool and unreadable, a usual Authority feature.

Javi and his friends continued to bombard the new instructor with questions while students piled into the class. I didn't bother to listening to any answers.

My closest friend, Cassi, sat down in a seat beside me. She leaned over and whispered in my ear, "Have you seen our new instructor?"

I gave her a look. She was staring at Mr. Gatti with a flirtatious smile. I knew Cassi was into the whole girls and boys stuff, but it was something we didn't discuss often. She'd flirt with anyone-- she'd flirt with the mailman, if she could.

Myself, not so much. I'd never admit this to anyone, even Cassi, but the idea of flirting and just guys in general made me anxious. It wasn't necessarily a confidence thing, I wasn't too harsh on the eyes, but more of a secluded thing. I liked being alone. Even having friends seemed like an unneeded hassle when the company of my own mind was enough. I didn't want anyone to throw that sense of security in my own body off.

I heard a loud buzz, signaling the beginning of class. Mr. Gitti stood up from his desk and made his way into the heart of the class. He did the usual introductions, and immediately dove into our first subject, Government. Government days were the worst, it was just endless propaganda on how our government had greatly improved and was the ultimately best version of itself. Which, unsurprisingly enough, was far from the truth.

Hardly listening, I swam deep in my thoughts. It was a new year, and I had an piqued feeling about this one. Maybe it'll be the year I actually do something with my life! I thought in sarcasm. With a heaved sigh, I anticipated and prepared myself for whatever was coming my way.
