"I don't know," Lake sighed. I frowned and tapped my foot anxiously.
We had been debating our plan for the past hour. Our original plan was a rebellion. We knew that everyone wanted change, and we could use that to our advantage. It would probably work, too, if it wasn't for Lake.
Lake had some concerns. He thought that a rebellion and violence wasn't going to get us anywhere. We should go for a more subtle path, and it would end up with the same result, yet less casualties.
I argued that if we did it his way, we wouldn't even live to see the day anything changes. If we wanted change, it would have to be now or never.
"Look, I see where you're coming from," I reassured him. Truly, I did. I just didn't agree with him.
He sighed again and ran one of his hands through his thick brown hair. "Then why don't you understand? You can't fight fire with fire."
I pursed my lips. He had a point, and his point had been killing me since the beginning. The simple thought of, what if I'm the bad guy? kept me up at night. I thought of all the novels I've read-- most of the time it was the villain that was creating the violence. The change.
Surely, though, the villain doesn't think they're wrong. They think they're making things right, creating a better world.
Isn't that what we think we're doing?
"Lake, I just... I want to live to see the day things change. I want to see kids wearing neon pinks and greens without getting killed for it. I want to see teenagers sneaking out to go see an R rated movie, or something, and not get killed for it. And, I want that movie to be something that isn't about how great our government is. Hmmm, wouldn't that be nice," I spilled my thoughts.
I watched Lake's face fall. Immediately, I felt my stomach drop. I was just trying to prove my point, not make him feel bad.
"You're right," he mumbled and avoided my eyes.
Sighing, I put my face in my hands. I felt bad.
"No, it's okay, I just... I feel really passionate about this, you know?" I tried to make him feel better. Had I been in the mood, I would make a joke. But nothing humorous came to mind, no matter how hard I tried.
He finally made eye contact. His expression was unreadable.
"I think you need to go home, now. You'll miss dinner-- and then you'll really be in trouble," he whispered so quietly, I could hardly hear him in the empty room.
Disappointment came over me, but I quickly regained myself. I set my jaw and nodded.
Wordlessly, I got up and left the room.
