Cassi gave me a once over and cheerfully smiled.
She squealed. "Yay! You're so ready for tonight."
I looked down at the navy blue dress Cass had gotten for the courting tonight. It was beautiful, I had to admit. It fit my personality perfectly, the bottom half was flow-ey and went down to my knees. The lace sleeves went to my elbows.
Cassi's dress was a lot more showy. It was tight on her body, showing all of her curves, and went down to her mid-thigh.
I gave her a small smile, despite my nervousness for the night ahead of us. I didn't normally go to courtings. A night with hormonal teens and hardly any adult supervision? Leave me out, thanks.
Cassi hadn't gotten me a date, after trying for a day or two she gave up.
"I'll be your friend-date. Or your actual date, I can see if Zex is okay with monogamy," Cassi had told me.
I laughed and shook my head. "No, I think I'll be fine."
So, I was just going as a loner. Who needs a date, anyways? Definitely not me.

The minute we walked into the room, all the guys stared at Cassi. The way some people looked at her made me want to puke. I knew her as a happy, funny, intelligent person, and for people just to see her as an attractive body appalled me.
Cassi desperately looked over people's heads for Zex's bleach blonde hair. I knew when she had found him, because she grinned and left me to go run over to him.
I suddenly felt anxious without Cass by my side. With her, I knew that I had constant protection. Without her, though...
I hovered by the food and drinks table, over drinking punch. Over drinking was something I did when I was anxious, I would pretend that I was drinking alcohol and in my mind, I'd become too drunk to care about anything. It oddly worked.
Once I started getting weird looks, I sighed and drifted away from the table. My safezone.
I tried to blend in with the crowd and go into the middle of the room, but after a few minutes, I somehow ended up against a wall.
Silently, I stood there, not moving or talking, just observing people. I noticed that Cassi was talking to a group of guys-- Zex was nowhere to be seen.
Lake was in the corner furthest from me, he seemed to be doing the same thing I was. He definitely stood out, every guy there was in a navy blue tuxedo, while he just casually leaned up against a wall in his white flannel and pants.
Javi was smack dab in the middle of the room talking to a girl who I hardly recognized. Her name started with a 'T', from what I remembered.
"Hey," a deep voice next to my ear whispered. I quickly spun around and came face to face with Zex. He was leaning on his side against the wall beside me.
I gave him a small smile. "Hey," I said lightly.
He grinned and inched closer to me. I studied his face. I could see why Cassi found him attractive, he had warm brown eyes and very faint freckles. He was fit, too-- he was one of the few people who were stronger than me.
"Hey, you look real nice tonight," he whispered in my ear. I felt my cheeks heat up and frowned. I didn't like him romantically-- besides, wasn't he supposed to be on a date with Cassi?
