The drive home couldn't be any lonelier. Three weeks doesn't seem that long, but when you have spent the entire time with someone, you form a certain bond that leaves you feeling alone when the other person has left. Even just for a little bit.
My ringtone sounds through the car and I fumble around on the passenger seat, my hand sliding under Jamie's jumper he gave to me and my bag to find my phone, which doesn't seem to be there. I twist around to find it on the back seat.
A blaring sound fills my ears, shaking my whole head and causing a horrible feeling in my ears. As I spin back around a blinding light, my scream and metal sounding like its being torn into shreds adds to the ear piercing noises, filling my head.

It feels as if my whole body is one big bruise. Even my eye lids. Opening them feels as if I'm trying to pry my eyes open but they're glued shut.
A heart monitor and muffled whispers are all I can hear. I try as hard as I can to open my eyes and to my amazement, I start to see slithers of light through the gaps and everyone's whispers hush.
Someone leans over her and presses a button that beeps - calling someone I guess.
Someone squeezes my hand and I manage to hold my eyes open long to enough to see its my mum, her eyes wet, red and puffy.
"Jessie," she murmurs, her voice croaked with sadness, "my baby,"
"David, Jake, Laura, she's awake,"
A moan escapes my lips as I try to shirt my position and mum and dad looks like they got punched in the throat.
"Wha- what happened?" I manage to stutter out, barely audible.
"You got hit when you were driving home, from dropping Jamie at the airport. Do you remember that?"
"Dropping him at the airport?"
"You remember Jamie don't you?" Mum starts crying all over again and dad starts asking the questions.
"Yeah, where is he?"
Dad sighs, "you drove him and his friend to the airport because they were leaving,"
"Back to England?"
Mum and dad nod, "but he has another week here, doesn't he?"
Laura hugs Jake - when all throughout our childhood they couldn't stand each other. Mum grabs dad's hand with her free hand and squeezes my hand.
The nurse walks in, a smile on her face as she sees me awake and talking.
"How are you going Miss. Thompson?"
I sigh, looking at her name badge, "I've been better thanks Kelly,"
"Well, you're awake now so thats a good sign," She chuckles, picking up the board hanging on the end of my bed. "Are you feeling nauseous? Or physically sick in anyway?"
"No. I just feel like one giant bruise,"
"Well. Even though it's painful, it's good that you don't feel sick, but the bruising sensation will fade over the next week or so,"
I nod, sending a shooting pain through my neck, a sharp intake of breath shows my pain and Kelly adjusts my pillows and a nearby chair so she can sit and test my joints.
"Your neck is just saw from the whiplash and its jarred from the impact, your joints all seem okay, it's just your back,"
My heart feels like it drops, "what's wrong with my back?"
"There's a few fractures in your lumber spine, which is your lower back. And also, you have slipped a disc completely which we'll have to operate for. So walking may be a difficult task for a few days, maybe even a week? But don't worry, I'll take good care of you,"
She takes a few steps out of the room, scribbling notes on the clipboard before she does and closes the door behind her.
"Does Jamie know?"
My mum sighs, "Don't worry about him-"
"But does he know?"
"Yes. I explained everything; that you've been out for 4 days, you've got bad back injuries and that you need surgery, that's what he knows and that's what we know. Are you sure you don't remember anything else?" Mum asks, and I shake my head in denial. It's like the whole last week has been taken from my memory, "do you want me to tell you some stuff that happened to try to trigger a memory?"
"Sure," I shrug.
Mum starts rattling off memories that she can think of, trying to get me to remember. Nothing rings a bell. All I can think about is Jamie.
"Has he called?"
"Who?"
"Jamie,"
"He called me. Apparently he tried your phone and he said that it was disconnected and then he asked me what happened. I told him to call your mum and so he did. He called me back and he was so distressed and he just wanted to come back and make everything alright. He just kept saying to me that I needed to apologize to you from him. He said to tell you he loves you and wishes he could come back for you,"
Laura speaks up, tears dripping down her face and starting down mine too.
"I love him too," I say, tears cascading over my eyes. Something clicks in my brain and I finally remember something. "He asked me to go with him,"
Mum stands up and everyone takes a step towards me, "What! Where?"
"It was a few days before he left, I'm not sure exactly, but we were lying in bed and he was saying he wanted me to come with him and I said I couldn't at the exact time, but that I would meet him in London in a few weeks,"
"And that was a few days before he left?" Mum asks.
"I think so,"
Jake left the room as we we're discussing my memories and came back in about an hour later with an open laptop, the screen facing his chest.
"This is for you," He says, placing the computer on my lap.
It's open on twitter. On Jamie's twitter.
'Cant believe how much my life could change in just one month x'
Was third from the top.
'Be careful today people. Things can happen in the blink of an eye. Stay safe x'
Was the second one from the top. And the top one was the most shocking.
'I love you J. Hope you're okay xx'
He'd said that to me.
"Minimize the twitter page and then see what's underneath," Jake smiles. I click the orange button on the top left of the screen and it fills with a webcam picture of Jamie. I look at the camera and the green light is on.
As soon as I see him, my breath catches in my chest and I choke back something in my throat.
"Hey Jess," He smiles, waving to me.
