"What's up?" Laura smiles, shutting the door behind her as she bounces over to my bed and sits in the chair beside me.

"The ceiling and considering thats all I have had to look at, I could tell you all about it," I mutter sarcastically.

"That's not good. Anyway. What have you heard?"

"From who?" I ask.

"The doctors? When's the surgery or is there no need, when can you start walking or will you be in a wheelchair for the rest of your life? That's what I mean,"

I chuckle at her insensitive side. "Surgery is in about 4 hours and I don't know. Depends on the surgery outcome," I shrug, the pain around my neck starting to ease off.

"It's in 4 hours?" She asks.

"Yep. Haven't eaten for 4 hours either," I say.

"That. Would be. So hard,"

I chuckle at her beaming smile as Kelly comes in to do final check ups before they prepare me for surgery.

"So will it still be in 4 hours?" I ask, laura listening in eagerly.

"sure will! We'll take you up in about 3 and a half, so be ready. Don't go wandering about," She winks at me and I laugh lightly.

"I'll try not to,"

Kelly walks out of the room and took the top sheet off the clipboard with her. "I can't wait for this surgery to be over with," Laura says.

"You're not the only one,"

"Well. I have to go and pick something up so I'll try and make it back tomorrow to see you,"

"What do you have to get?" I ask inquisitively.

"I just have to get some stuff for a friend and then I'm going home to eat because I can," She chuckles, teasing me.

"Oh you wait until I can. I'm going to eat as much as you would in a week,"

She nods, "Alright alright game on. I'll see you later,"

She ruffles my hair and walks out of the room leaving me alone with the only sound being the heart monitor which Kelly still insists I be connected to. The room I'm in would have to be the plainest room I've ever seen. The curtains connecting to the roof are a faded olive green with waves rippling through them with the air. The window, a small and perfectly measured square sitting on the wall to my left. And the TV attached to the roof that flickers occasionally depending on the channel. It isn't a pleasurable stay here.

My eyes draw close and I drift off to sleep effortlessly.

"Are you ready Jess?" Kelly smiles, looking over me from the head of my bed where she's pushing me towards the operating room.

"I suppose,"

Mum and dad stand next to the bed as we stop in the hall, mum holding my hand. "Well, I'll see you soon Jess," She leans over and kisses my forehead softly and steps back so dad can step forward, "See you later kiddo," He kisses my cheek and steps back as Kelly opens the doors and wheels me in.

"Okay, I'm just going to put this mask over your face and when I tell you to, start counting backwards from ten for me, okay?"

I nod as she slips the elastic behind my head and turns a knob on a tank.

"Go ahead,"

"10, 9, 8, 7, 6," My eyes feel fuzzy and my brain feels like someone is dimming out a light, "5, 4, 3-"
