Wrong Assumptions

"I'm assuming that you know why you're here, Mr Malfoy?"

Draco shook his head as he adjusted himself uncomfortably on a plush velvet chair. He was sitting in front of the Headmaster's desk, behind which Dumbledore paced.

"Every assumption I've had of you have been wrong, Sir." Draco replied weakly, and was met with a throaty chuckle. Draco found it oddly ironic that the only three people to have ever intimidated him was the Dark Lord, Dumbledore and his father.

"Ah, yes, well, I do have a tendency to surprise people!"

Draco blinked. Suddenly, Dumbledore's humour disappeared, to be replaced with a grim expression.

"Mr Malfoy, you father is planning to visit Hogwarts on business."

Draco's breathing hitched. What?!

"He has requested for you to meet him five times a day, and will be observing you and your lessons, recreational activities and routines. Of course, we welcomed him."

"But-"

"Mr Malfoy, Hogwarts rules states that every parent or carer has every right to see how their child is getting along. We cannot deny your father of wanting to know how his only son is doing."

"I doubt he is coming just to watch me frolic in lessons-"

"Mr Malfoy, your father is coming whether you like it or not, and we cannot assume that it is for any reason other than he wanted to se his beloved son. Am I clear?"

Despite his strong words, the Headmaster managed to soften the tone with his calming voice. Draco stared silently at the elderly man in front of him.

"Also, he specifically told me not to inform you of his arrival. Oh well, I can inform you of his upcoming arrival, can I not?"

Draco quickly disguised his laugh as a cough, but Dumbledore had already heard it. He smiled kindly at him.

"Mr Malfoy, may I give you some advice?"

Draco frowned, then nodded.

"Thank you. Do not fraternise with those your father may consider... how to put it... beneath you."

A red-headed beauty entered Draco's mind, causing him to sigh quietly.

Hearing the exhale, Dumbledore added, "Not for your sake. For theirs."

Gulping as the realisation dawned upon him, Draco nodded and stood.

"Yes Headmaster."

"Good. Now back to class. I believe Professor Snape has an exciting potion for you to make."

"Yes sir. Thank you sir."

"You are most welcome, Mr Malfoy."

Nodding again respectfully, Draco turned, and stepped through the Griffin doors to get back to Potions, his mind reeling.
