Sirenia spat through clenched her teeth together as the horse shot out from under her, holding on for dear life as he did so. "I hate horses!"
Rosaline chuckled, watching as her sister tried to put herself back together before the horse had a chance to repeat the same motion again.
The girls' time in Kentucky had been going well so far. Really. This moment was just a... lapse in quality.
It was day 3 of their trip and girls had gone to the second racing barn of the trip today to try a few more horses. Yesterday they had gone to the first one and tried 5 horses each, ultimately leaving with a few of those 10 in mind to come back for. They were being good and wouldn't be pulling the trigger on any of them until having gone to all the barns- and that was fine as the girls had first dibs on all of them regardless.
Most had been well behaved- for babies, I mean. They were all either ready to retire from racing or had never started for some reason or another, making them perfect candidates for restarting and training projects for the girls. Some would become resales and some would stay- it all depended on how they turned out once they were trained.
But this horse, the horse Sirenia was just nearly flung off of, absolutely should not be coming back with them.
(Which meant he totally was.)
His race name was the Scarlet Speedster, meaning he was obviously known around the racing barn as Flash. He was given that name in hopes of being fast- but they'd been quite disappointed to find he didn't like racing at all. Although he did like going fast- but only when he was trying to throw you off.
And that was why Rosaline was currently thinking about what she was going to offer the owner to take him right then and there.
Watching Sirenia ride the (coincidentally) scarlet colored horse made her realize he wasn't acting that way out of malice or dislike for the rider- it was all fueled by what Rosaline clearly saw as fear and lack of training or desensitization. She saw it in how he flinched every time Sirenia applied her leg anyhow he tucked his head to avoid the bit- he must have been trained too harshly.
Flash was the second horse Sirenia had tried so far- the first had been a stunning flaxen chestnut mare called A Fool's Princess. She had been fiery and sassy at first but quickly settled down as much as Sirenia had expected; it had been only her second or third ride since coming off the track only 3 months prior, of course. Neither sister had been expecting much. She was another good candidate to take home- but they were still doing their best to keep their options open.
Except Flash. Flash was coming home.
Rosaline turned to the owner of the farm, a heavyset Spanish man named Don, and pulled her checkbook out of her breeches front pocket. "How much for him?"
Don looked a bit shocked, his eyebrows raising halfway up his forehead and his double chin multiplying. When he spoke he had a thick Spanish accent, making his words sound constantly questioning and a bit surprised. " 'Dees one?"
"Yes this one." Rosaline nodded, waving her checkbook and black gel pen pointedly. "How much?"
He only looked more surprised as she repeated her question. "I have to check books. Yes. Check books." He trailed off, turning and waddling his way back towards his office to assumably 'check the books' and get her a price. Rosaline noticed he had mysterious stain on the back of his pants as he walked away- along with matching sweat stains around his armpits and shoulder blades. Disgusting.
