The Next Day
Aria's Pov
I anxiously look around for Piper as kids flood out of the school. I recognize a few kids from her class, but no sign of her yet. Since getting that text last night from A, or should I say V for Vendetta, I've been completely paranoid. I almost didn't want to let Piper go to school, fearing that something would happen to her while she wasn't with Ezra and I. All that keeps replaying through my mind is that one time years ago I was supposed to pick Malcolm up, but A got to him first.
Stella holds my hand and tugs on my arm every so often, no doubt bored of just standing here. She too looks around for Piper, this routine something we do every weekday. The only difference today is that I'm paranoid that this new A somehow got to her first.
Stella yanks her hand from mine and starts running into the crowd of children, absolutely no explanation first.
"Stella!" I yell, starting in the direction she went. But being younger than even the youngest kids here, she's a lot shorter and harder to spot. I frantically look around for her, scared that somehow the new A will get to her before I do. I stop in my tracks, kids still shoving their way around me to find their own parents. Up ahead, stands Stella with her arms wrapped around Piper.
"I found her Mommy!" She exclaims, looking at me proudly.
"Stella," I sigh "You can't just run off like that, you scared me."
"Sorry." She replies, adverting her eyes from mine.
"Don't do that again okay?" I warn, receiving a nod. Both my girls walk up to me, and I can't help but hug them. They're safe, A didn't lay a finger on them.
"Aria!" I hear someone say from behind me. I turn around, Piper's teacher Ms. Awalt smiling at me. She's a sweet older lady, and really great with kids at that.
"Hi, Ms. Awalt." I stammer, kind of taken off guard.
"I've been meaning to email and ask if you could come into the classroom one day after school, but if you're not in a rush does now work?" She asks.
"Uh," I start, a little confused "Yeah, now works. Is everything okay?"
"Oh everything's fine dear!" She replies "No need to worry." We follow her inside the school and down the hall to the kindergarten class, Stella running along to keep up with her sister. The classroom is filled with art and colour, the atmosphere quite happy.
"Mommy this is my desk!" Piper exclaims, sitting down on a chair at a cluster of desks "And that one is Kenna's, and that's Parker's, and that's Nova's!"
"That's pretty cool." I tell her "Are you a good girl for Ms. Awalt?"
"Oh she's just a darling little girl!" Ms. Awalt cuts in "Today Piper was my special helper at snack time."
"I'm glad." I smile "She really loves coming to school."
"Well she's doing very well." The sweet lady tells me "Which is part of the reason I wanted you to come in here today."
"Ms. Awalt can me and Stella go play with the toys?" Piper asks.
"Of course honey!" She replies "Is this your sister?"
Piper nods "Her name's Stella."
Ms. Awalt crouches down in front of the girls "Hi Stella, nice to meet you. Will you be coming to kindergarten here when you're old enough?"
"Yeah." Stella nods "When I'm as big as Piper."
"And how old are you now?" She asks.
"Um," Stella starts, holding up two fingers "This many."
