The Next Day
Aria's PovThe sun shines brightly down on Rosewood today, it's expected to be one of the warmest days so far this year. Sure it's only spring, but based off of this gorgeous Sunday, summer seems to be fast approaching.
"Look Stella," Piper calls to her sister as she holds up her doll "She's ready for the princess ball."
"She's not." Stella replies, talking about her own doll "I can't get on her dress."
"Well the princess ball is about to start." Piper declares "You have to hurry."
"I need help." My youngest daughter whines, her lip in that infamous Stella pout.
"You guys, it's too hot to be inside." I interrupt "What do you say we go play outside, it's such a nice day."
"But we're about to have the princess ball." Piper answers.
"How about you have it after, when it starts to cool down a bit?" I say "Right now it's so nice outside that we're crazy for being in here."
"Okay," She agrees "What are we gonna do?"
"I have a good idea." I grin "Let's break out the sprinkler."
"Okay!" Piper squeals, seeming to forget about her doll as she drops it onto the floor.
As I drag the hose off its spool and out into the yard, I can't help but feel the urge to join my daughters in playing under the sprinklers cool water. I don't know if it's just because I'm not used to the heat yet this year, but it's practically scorching hot outside.
"You guys ready?" I ask, smiling at Piper and Stella as they anxiously watch me hook the sprinkler up. Gatsby runs around at our heels, his tongue out as he pants heavily.
"Uh huh," Piper nods, grinning excitedly. She's the first to run through it once I've turned it on, Stella following after a few seconds of hesitation. Their shrieks of laughter bring a smile to my face, and even more so once Stella and Piper join hands and run through the sprinkler together. After a few minutes, I notice people from the house next door come outside, and recognize them as the new neighbours. It's a woman and her young daughter, the one that looked to be Piper's age. Wanting to be a friendly and welcoming neighbour, I walk up to the fence that divides our houses.
"Hi," I start, giving the woman a friendly smile "I'm Aria."
"I'm Jess," She replies "And this is my daughter Macyn. We just moved in a few days ago, so I'm glad to already know that we have a nice neighbour."
"Oh," I start, realizing she's talking about me "Yeah, I wanted to give you a warm welcome to the neighbourhood."
"Well thank you, it seems great so far, there are so many families." Jess says "In our old apartment there weren't many kids, so Macyn here is excited to have lots of friends around to play with." I smile at the little girl, who has brown hair and wide eyes of the same colour.
"I actually have two daughters," I reply "One of them is about the same age as you, Macyn. How old are you?"
"Six." She answers.
A smile comes to my face "So is my daughter, her name's Piper. If you guys want you can come over to our backyard, the girls are playing in the sprinkler."
"I think we'd like that." Jess nods, looking down at her daughter "We'll just run inside and I'll get Macyn's bathing suit."
By the time our new neighbours have joined us in the yard, Stella and Piper are both drenched from running under the sprinkler so many times. Luckily, they warm up to Macyn quickly, and play with her as if they've known her far longer than just a few minutes. And even better, in my opinion, is how well Jess and I are getting along. Not that I expected otherwise, but I didn't think we'd be much more than just neighbours who chatted now and then. Although now I'm thinking that we could be real friends, you know, not just the type of 'friends' that talk only when their kids are playing together. Besides Hanna of course, I don't have very many friends with kids, so I'm hoping that could change now that Jess lives next door.
