Later That Night
Piper's Pov

"Who wants to play Just Dance?!" Uncle Caleb bellows.

Stella, Madden, and Isla all simultaneously shout "Me!"

Poppy, Bella, and I just watch, all sharing one similar thought; that we have to find a way to get out of here. And not because we're being grumpy pre-teens or something my Mom would say, but because V told us we have to. That's why I was not wanting to come to Auntie Hanna's tonight, because V said I would have to sneak out later and I knew it'd be easier if I wasn't in a house full of people. Poppy and Bella got the same instructions as me, but Auntie Emily said no to them staying home as well.

"What do we do?" Poppy whispers to me, her voice nearly drowned out by the Selena Gomez song blasting from the tv.

"I think I have an idea," I reply, motioning for Bella to lean in closer "We could ask if we can walk to the gas station to get candy or something, but instead we'll just meet V."

"Are you guys sharing secrets over there?" Uncle Toby asks half-jokingly from the other side of the room.

"Yep." I reply quickly, offering him a slightly-forced smile.

"Okay, anyway," I turn back to Poppy and Bella "I think that's our best option. It's believable."

"Yeah, except there's literally every kind of candy you could want in the kitchen." Bella interjects "They really stocked up for just one night."

"Well, we could say we want a slushie." I reply.

"If we say something like that, the little kids will want to come too." Poppy adds "And then I'm sure Uncle Toby will suggest we all go to get slushies." As much as I want to believe my plan will work, I know that she's right. Uncle Toby has always been the fun Uncle, whether he's that way because he feels obligated being the only one without kids—or he's just like that—he would definitely suggest a late-night junk food run. Although there's also another thing I know about him—he's got a huge soft spot for us kids. And though he might not even realize it, he's especially lenient with me in particular, being the first-born and all.

"I have an idea," I mutter to Poppy and Bella, before getting up out of my spot on the couch.

"Uncle Toby," I start, sitting down next to him "Can I ask you something?" The immediate look on his face is concern, although it quickly fades.

"Yeah, always."

I take a moment to properly form my words in my head "Bella, Poppy, and I really want to go to the gas station close by to get a slushie, but we don't want the little kids going with us. Can the three of us walk there?"

"I think you'll have to ask your Dad," He answers "I don't know if he'd want you guys walking to the store in the dark."

"Well, can you ask him for me?" I continue almost nervously "If I ask him he'll say no right away."

Uncle Toby gives me a quizzical look "I don't know about that Pipes, maybe he doesn't want you walking in the dark for a good reason." I think about V's note, then look to my little sister as she dances quite ungracefully in the centre of the living room. I can't let anything happen to her.

"Please," I say in nearly a whisper. Uncle Toby studies me for a moment, giving me a look that's probably not unlike one he gives to people he questions at the police station.

"If you want a slushie that badly, I can drive you there." He offers. Although by the tone in his voice, I can tell he's a bit skeptical on whether or not this is actually all about a frozen drink.

"It's okay," I sigh, accepting that my plan isn't going to work "Thanks anyway Uncle Toby."

"Hey Piper," He starts as I go to stand up "Is everything alright?" For a second I don't know how to respond, because if I could, I'd tell him how everything is the exact opposite of alright.

"Everything's fine." I lie, getting up and sitting back down beside Bella and Poppy. I don't think I could've looked at the concerned look on Uncle Toby's face for a second longer without spilling everything to him.

"What happened?" Bella asks.

"Nothing," I reply "We have to find another way to sneak out."

"Maybe we just shouldn't," Poppy blurts "Maybe we should just stay here and ignore V."

"We can't do that Poppy," Bella shakes her head "V said if we disobeyed him that he'd do something to one of us, and that we wouldn't know when, or what, or even which one of us it'd be."

"But has V ever actually done anything to prove he's serious?" Poppy rebuts "For all we know, he could just be pranking us."

"I have to tell you guys something," I cut in "But not in this room." They follow me around the corner into the kitchen, both looking at me nervously.

"V isn't joking around," I start "When I was six, h-he kidnapped me. I forgot about until I met him at the park a few weeks ago, but it was definitely him that did it, I remember the mask. He isn't pranking us, and when he says he's gonna do something, he's gonna do it."

Poppy and Bella just stare at me, and as I await their response, I realize something. They're not staring at me, they're staring past me. Hesitantly, I turn around, making eye contact with my Dad standing in the kitchen doorway. And by the look on his face, I can tell he heard everything I just said.

"Piper, we need to talk upstairs."
