A Phone Call Away

Later That Day
Ezra's Pov

"Her cellphone still isn't showing up." Caleb says "Either it happens to be dead, or someone shut it down."

"Someone as in V?" I ask.

Caleb looks down "Maybe, I don't know."

"Well who else would've done something like this?" I snap.

"I know." He sighs "There's just something that doesn't quite make sense to me. If V somehow took Aria and the kids, what are the chances that she managed to grab her phone in the process?"

"She could've had it with her already." I say "Besides, her phones not showing up anywhere, for all we know it could be dead at home."

"Daddy!" Madden calls to Caleb, toddling over to him from Hanna. She sits curled up at the other end of the couch, looking more and more anxious as the minutes go by.

"Hey buddy, Daddy's kinda busy right now." Caleb says, placing a gentle hand on the back of his head.

"Yeah, Madden come back over here." Hanna tells him. The little blonde boy runs back over to his Mom on his toddler legs, the sight of it making me miss my own wife and kids even more.

"Okay, like I was saying before, I think it's a little weird that if she did manage to grab her phone in the midst of all the chaos, that she didn't call anyone. I mean it takes two seconds to call the police, and after all these years with V in our lives, I know Aria's become conditioned to thinking on her toes." Caleb says.

"Yeah but you don't know the exact situation." I reply "I'm sure Aria tried to do everything in her power to keep the kids and her safe."

"I know, I don't doubt that." He nods "I just..."

I raise my eyebrows "You just what?"

"I...I think that we're looking at this the wrong way." Caleb says.

"What do you mean?" I question.

"Well, Aria's car is gone, it's not in the driveway." He frowns "That means that Aria was out somewhere with the kids, although wherever V...took them from couldn't have been somewhere very public, I mean how easy is it to kidnap a woman and two kids with people all around? So where was Aria taking the kids that was in the middle of nowhere, without her cellphone?"

"We don't know she didn't have her cellphone, if V found it on her he could've—" Caleb cuts me off.

"I think Aria might've left a little more willingly than we're thinking."

"What is that supposed to mean Caleb?" I ask a little too harshly "You think she...you think she left?"

"Well, I don't know if I'm jumping straight to that conclusion, but maybe something like that." He replies gently.

"No," I shake my head "There's no way that Aria took the kids and skipped town. I-I can't believe you'd even suggest that! What would possibly provoke her to do something like that, we were so happy Caleb!"

"I'm not saying I have any clue why she'd do it, I'm just saying it looks that way." He answers, trying not to raise his voice.

"Well that's not it, Aria didn't skip town." I finalize "That's not what happened."

"Maybe he's right." Hanna pipes up feebly "M-maybe Caleb's right."
