The Next Day
Aria's Pov

I turn over and open my eyes, although it's just as dark when I do. The basement is windowless, the little battery-operated lamp we found turned off while we're asleep. I shiver slightly under the thin blanket, cuddling into Ezra in hopes that he'll warm me up. And though he's normally like a living heater, Ezra isn't all that warm either. There's only a blanket separating us from the cement floor.

"Good morning." Ezra says groggily "Or whatever time of the day it is." I reach over and grab my cellphone, turning it on only to look at the time. There's no service here, so we can't contact someone for help.

"It's just past ten." I say hoarsely, snuggling into Ezra even more. My eyes still burn from all the crying I did last night, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't have more tears left in me. Just knowing that Piper's out there with V and that we're trapped in here unable to help her is so frustrating.

Ezra climbs out from underneath the blanket, walking up the stairs and trying to push open the door for the millionth time since we've been trapped here. Of course, it doesn't budge.

"Okay, I know we've already done this, but let's weigh our options again." Ezra says, clearly annoyed by the door not opening.

"What options?" I sigh "We can't open the door, there are no windows, and we don't have cell service."

"We can't just sit here Aria!" He says loudly "There's no food or water, we can't live forever in here. Eventually we'll die!"

"Don't say that!" I snap.

"Why, we both know it's true." Ezra continues "We can't wait for someone to rescue us, no one's going to notice that we're missing because no one knows we're here!"

"But—" I start, before getting cut off.

"Think about it," He says "We don't have family or friends that will notice our disappearance. We're on our own." I try and respond, to prove to Ezra that we're not as doomed as he thinks we are, but I realize that he's right. We're not getting out of here with anyone's help but our own.

"Okay." I mumble quietly, trying to blink back the tears beginning to well in my eyes.

"Hey, we're gonna figure this out." Ezra says, walking toward me "Don't worry."

"Don't tell me not to worry." I snap "I'm allowed to worry. One of our daughters is kidnapped, the other probably hates us for leaving her, all while we're trapped in this basement."

"I'm trying really hard to stay optimistic about this, because I know that once we start doubting ourselves it's only going to go downhill." Ezra replies "We're going to get out of here, we're going to find Piper, and then we're going to get on the next plane back home. We'll figure this out, just like we've done with everything that's gone wrong in the past."

"I admire your optimism, but this is more than just a little bump in the road." I say "This time, it's hardly in our hands."

"That's not entirely true!" Ezra urges "We can't just sit down here and wait for something to happen, we have to do whatever it takes to get out of here and back to our girls." At the mention of Piper and Stella, I burst into unavoidable tears. Ezra hugs me, not saying anything as I sob into his chest. Just the thought of never seeing my daughters again is enough to cause me to break down.

"Hey, remember that one time we took the girls to eat at that nice restaurant in Philly?" Ezra asks suddenly "I don't know what we were thinking, taking kids that young to a place where there were no kids menus, but we did it anyway. You did their hair up all pretty, and they both wore fancy little dresses that they'd never worn before because there hadn't been an occasion. Remember all the twirling they did? They looked like little angels." I can't help but smile, remembering that day so well. It was in the late fall, and Ezra and I thought it would be a fun idea to take Piper and Stella on a fancy dinner date.
