A Month & 1/2 Later
Piper's Pov
I feel Bella tap my arm, and divert my attention away from the book in my hands. After lunch at school, we always have silent reading for 25 minutes; it's secretly my favourite.
"What?" I ask Bella, glancing at Mr. Reynolds at his desk.
"You should come over after school, I have to show you something. Well, me and Poppy do." She whispers.
"Okay," I reply, frowning slightly "I have to ask first though, but I think I'll be allowed."
As I continue reading, I can't help but wonder what Bella and Poppy have to show me. My mind flashes to a few years ago when there was a really cute cat in their backyard and they brought it into their room to cuddle. Auntie Emily wasn't happy about that.
"Jace put your phone away," Mr. Reynolds' voice says, snapping me from my thoughts. I look over at Jace, who flashes me a quick smile as he shoves his phone into his bag. I feel myself blush, but smile back anyway. Last weekend when Macyn and I were at the pool, Jace happened to be there too. Since Macyn knows I have a crush on him, she asked him to hangout with us. And when we were waiting for our parents to pick us up, he told me he liked me. Macyn says that now we have to start dating each other, Bella agrees, and Poppy said that even though she doesn't know how that's all supposed to work, she thinks it makes sense that Jace and I date. To be honest, I'm not so sure I really want to. And it's not that I don't like him, it's just that I'm not sure how to be someone's girlfriend.
After school ends and my Mom says yes to me going over to Poppy and Bella's, the three of us make our way outside.
"Wait," I say, stopping right before we get to the front doors of the school "I still have to meet Stella at the water fountain, she doesn't know I won't be on our bus."
When we get to the fountain—Stella and I's meeting spot—she's already there. Madden stands with her, even though Auntie Hanna picks him and Isla up from school and is probably already waiting outside.
"I'm not gonna be on our bus today," I say to my little sister "But I'll wait outside with you until it comes and you get on."
"Sometimes our bus comes before yours," Bella reminds me.
"Oh yeah," I frown "Well, we'll figure it out."
Even though the sky is a clear blue and the sun is out, the spring air is a little chillier than it has been the past few weeks. I wait anxiously for the bus to come, imagining it's warmth to try and distract myself. The twins and Stella stand almost silently beside me, until Jace joins us and gets our little group talking again.
"There's our bus!" Poppy sighs in relief. I look at Stella, and for some reason she seems a lot younger than usual right now. I always wait with her after school, it doesn't feel right to just leave her alone.
"Hey Jace," I start, realizing I have other options "Do you mind waiting with my sister and making sure she gets on the bus?"
"I'm not a baby Piper," Stella cuts in stubbornly.
"I know you're not, but you've never taken the bus alone." I tell her "Mom always picks you up if I'm not taking the bus." I frown at the thought of our Mom, who's been on bedrest for the past month or so. That means she can't get out of bed very often, or else the babies could be born too early.
"I'll make sure she gets on okay," Jace says promisingly "We take the same bus anyway."
"Thanks," I smile, blushing slightly.
Once Bella, Poppy, and I are on the bus, they both turn to me with smirks on their faces.
"He really likes you," Bella starts.
"Yeah, it's so obvious." Poppy finishes.
"I know, he already told me, remember?" I reply shyly.
"Do you think you guys are gonna kiss?" Poppy questions.
"I don't know." I say a little too quickly, although I can't help but smile slightly.
"It'll be your first kiss!" Bella exclaims.
"Shhh!" I tell her, looking around at the other people on the bus.
"Don't be embarrassed that you're gonna kiss someone, I think everyone wishes they could too." She answers "Especially their crush."
"I'm not gonna kiss anyone," I mumble.
"Why not?" Bella says "Then you'd be the third girl in our grade to kiss someone." Though I won't admit it, that would be kind of cool to be the third. The first was Haley and the second was Bella.
"If he wants to kiss you will you kiss him?" Poppy asks.
"I don't know, maybe." I shrug.
Bella giggles excitedly, her fists clenched "Yay!"
When we get to Poppy and Bella's house, we immediately go to the kitchen to look for a snack. Auntie Emily doesn't get home for about another hour, so we're home alone for the time being. It's a lot more fun being home alone with friends than it is to really be home all by yourself.
"What'd you have to show me?" I ask in between bites of a chocolate chip cookie. Poppy and Bella glance uneasily at each other, before both turning toward me.
"It's in our room." Poppy replies. I follow them down the hall to their bedroom, where Bella immediately goes to the closet. After a few seconds of digging through the bottom drawer of the art caddy, she walks back over to Poppy and I.
"We got it yesterday," Bella hands me a folded piece of paper "It says it's from someone called V."
