Five & a Half Years Later
Aria's Pov
"Piper, wake up." I say, opening my now twelve-year-olds bedroom door "Time for school."
She rolls over to face me, opening her eyes slowly "Can I stay home today?"
"Nope." I reply "Spring break is in a few days, you can sleep in then."
"Okay." She yawns, rubbing her eyes.
"Don't fall back asleep," I tell her "You don't wanna be late."
"I won't," Piper says, sitting up "I'm awake now."
"Alright," I smile "I'll meet you downstairs for breakfast, I just have to wake your sister up."
I walk into Stella's room, going straight to her bed knowing that she doesn't wake as easily as Piper.
"Stella, time to get up." I say softly. She continues sleeping, sprawled out on the bed as if she has to occupy as much space possible.
"Wake up Stella," I shake her gently "It's time for school." She stirs, although lays still again in a matter of seconds.
"Come on Stell, we can't do this every morning." I sigh, pulling the covers off her. If she's already like this at eight years old, I don't know what I'm going to do when she's a teenager.
"Mommy," She whines as I open her curtains, letting the morning sunlight in.
"It's time for school," I say "One of the last days before spring break." Stella just rubs her eyes and yawns, staying in bed.
"Don't make me come tickle you," I say only half sarcastically "You know I will."
"I'm up!" She giggles, moving to a sitting position.
"Okay," I smile "Here are your clothes."
Once I'm sure she's fully awake, I leave the room and head downstairs to make scrambled eggs for everyone. To my surprise, Ezra beat me to it, standing at the stove with a nearly empty carton of eggs on the counter beside him. I walk up and hug him from behind, kissing his back softly.
"Good morning my love." He says, turning around to face me "And good morning babies." He crouches down to kiss my bump. After a little while of trying, I'm finally pregnant again, and this time with not one but two babies, a girl and a boy.
"Is it 20 weeks already?" Ezra asks, standing up normally again.
"Tomorrow." I smirk "I can't believe I'll be five months along already."
"Over halfway there." He adds.
"Especially if they come a little early." I say "Which will probably happen."
"Maybe," Ezra pulls me closer to him "But how about you try and keep them in there as long as possible?"
"I'm trying." I reply "Although it's kinda hard when all I've been craving lately is spicy food."
Piper walks into the kitchen, her clothes on and her hair brushed. Stella joins us a few seconds later, although her hair is a little less school-ready.
"Did you brush your hair yet?" Ezra asks her.
"Um..." She says, feeling her hair "Nope."
"Okay, go back upstairs and do that quickly, breakfast will be another minute." He tells her.
"Dad don't forget we need to stop at the store on the way to school today." Piper says.
"Right," Ezra nods "Remind me what for again?"
"Charcoal, remember!" She replies.
"Right! How could I forget?" He sighs "Just let me ask, why do you need charcoal at school? They're not letting you barbecue are you?"
"Dad they don't let us run in the halls because it's too dangerous, I don't think they'd let twelve-year-olds barbecue." Piper chuckles "And it's for art, Ms. Reynolds said we can do an art project of our choice, so I wanna do a charcoal drawing."
"Oh, that kind of charcoal." Ezra huffs "Sounds good, we just have to leave earlier than we usually do."
He plates the eggs, telling the girls to eat quickly so they won't be late. In between almost every bite, their usual chatter fills the room. I can't wait for two more to be added to the bunch, although I also can't help but feel incredibly nervous. I don't know how twin Mom's do it; taking care of one baby at a time is hard enough, I can't imagine what it's like with two. I tell myself not to worry about it right now; I have four more months to do that.
Once Ezra and the girls leave for work and school, I'm left with the house to myself, at least for another half an hour. I work not too far from home, so I don't have to worry about a long commute or anything like that. After Piper and Stella were both in school, I got a job at a vintage camera shop that fixes and resells old cameras. I got it originally for a temporary thing until I found something more-long term, but I ended up falling in love with it. Although now with twins on the way, I soon get to resume my position as a stay-at-home-mom.
I head back upstairs to get dressed, which I really should've done before I came down earlier. The further into this pregnancy I get, the harder it becomes to do everyday things, like walking up stairs for example.
"Okay, what'll it be today?" I say to my bare baby bump "You guys are making it hard to fit into most of my clothes, so I guess that rules out a bunch of things. We could go for this nice maternity top with these equally nice maternity leggings." I pull them from the back of my closet with a quizzical stare.
"Why did I ever buy this?" I question, discarding the shirt onto the bed. This process continues until I'm out of maternity clothes, and as it also seems, patience and time.
"Okay, this has to fit." I huff, pulling out a loose-fitting shirt that was a favourite pre-bump days. And it does fit even now, for the most part.
"Is that okay?" I ask no one in particular "That my belly's sticking out a bit at the bottom? No, of course it's not." I take the shirt off, until I'm left sitting again in my bra and underwear.
"Ezra," I whine once he answers the phone "I have a problem."
"What's up?" He asks.
"Nothing fits," I sigh "And I know I sound like every pregnant woman ever, but nothing fits. I don't know what to do, I have to leave for work, like, now and I'm practically naked."
"Go to my side of the closet and grab that sweater, you know that dark blue knitted one that's a little big on me?" Ezra asks "It'll fit you and the bump perfectly."
"Okay." I pout "Thanks."
"Don't sound so sad about it." He chuckles "It's a nice sweater."
"I know," I reply "But I can't wear it everyday for the next four months."
"We can figure something else out." He says "We'll do that later, class is starting in a minute and as the professor, I shouldn't be late."
"Right," I smile "Thanks baby."
"Anytime." Ezra answers "I love you."
"I love you too." I say.
By the time I leave for work, I can tell that I'm most likely going to be late. Although luckily, I seem to be making great time so far, barely getting any red lights. I breathe a sigh of relief as the last light before I arrive at work turns green just as I approach it, although not even a second later, I find myself wishing that it stayed red a little longer.
I don't see the car until just before it collides with my own. And by then, it's too late to do anything; I'm pushed sideways through the intersection, my head slamming against the window and instantly rendering me unconscious.
