Two Days Later
Aria's Pov
Aged 12.
Blue eyes.
Brown hair.
I stare at the cover of today's newspaper, my eyes stinging with tears.
Last seen May 13th.
The absolute longest two days of my life. I can hardly sleep, yet every second I'm awake is filled with ever-growing pain. It's been just under 48 hours and they've felt like an entire lifetime.
"Here you go," Ezra walks into the room with a plate of food I barely bother glancing at. Even though we haven't been apart since Piper went missing, his red-rimmed eyes and unusually pale skin still manage to shock me.
"You have to eat Aria," He huffs, sitting down on the couch next to me "You've hardly eaten anything these past couple days."
"The thought of eating makes me want to puke." I reply.
"You still have to try," He sets the plate on my lap "If not for you, for the babies."
I don't reply, knowing he's right and hating that my aversion to food could affect my unborn babies. So, I pick up the fork and stab it into a chunk of fried potato, then suppress a gag as I force myself to swallow it.
"Stella still asleep?" I ask Ezra once I'm sure the piece of potato isn't going to come right back up.
"Yeah, I just checked on her." He answers. Since Piper was kidnapped we've all been especially strict about no one being alone, so right now Hanna sits upstairs with Stella as she naps. We're all still at the lake house, not only because it's easier to watch each other's backs, but also because we think better when we put our heads together. The police are doing everything they can, and we're doing everything we can.
"Have another bite." Ezra interrupts my train of thought. I don't bother saying anything back, putting a bite of food into my mouth without a single peep.
"Ezra?" I blurt suddenly, setting my fork down.
"Yeah?" He answers, and I do my best to ignore the hollow look in his eyes.
"Can I tell you something?" I continue.
"Of course, always." Ezra urges.
"Okay," I start, placing a hand on my seemingly massive baby bump "I...I don't think I'm going to last much longer—with the babies still in my stomach, I mean. I just have this feeling that I'm going to go into labour so soon, and it's only growing more apparent. I just...I can tell that things are going to get moving very soon. It's horrible timing but we need to keep that in mind as well."
"Okay," He replies, nodding to his lap "We're about to have two new babies, we definitely need to find the headspace to accommodate to that."
"Yeah," I say, staring at my bump.
"Are you experiencing any signs of early labour?" Ezra asks.
"Um..." I frown "Maybe? Since Piper's been gone I've felt numb mentally and physically, so that might be masking any early signs of labour. I'm just not in the headspace to be thinking about any of that right now."
"I know, but you're gonna have to try." He says "Whether you're ready or not those babies are going to come out soon, you have to try and start preparing yourself for labour."
"I know." I answer quietly.
"It's gonna be okay." Ezra tries to sound promising, and even though I'm not sure what exactly he's referring to, I try and let his words make me feel a little better.
