The Vacation No One Wants

Ezra's Pov

"What is that even supposed to mean?" Caleb asks.

"It's a riddle." I reply "I guess we're meant to solve it."

"Okay, so it seems like a place." Toby starts "A place with a big stone statue...New York?"

"But New York doesn't famously dance the samba." Aria scrunches her nose "And it definitely doesn't have endless summers, that's for sure."

"Where else has a big stone statue?" He says "Somewhere that's hot, somewhere like...Texas?"

"I don't think they dance the samba either." Caleb chuckles "To be honest, I don't think anywhere in North America does."

"You think V took her to another continent?!" Aria nearly-shrieks, looking as if she's going to burst into tears again. I give her hand a squeeze under the table, feeling completely helpless.

"Well...where in North America do people famously dance the samba in always-hot weather?" Caleb asks lightly "That sounds like a completely different culture." Aria opens her mouth to reply, but breaks down crying before she gets a word out. I wipe my tears away as I pull her against me, trying not to let her see me cry.

"Spain?" Toby asks "It's warm there."

"Is there a big stone statue in Spain?" I ask. He pulls out his phone and opens Google, his fingers shaking slightly. After a few seconds, Toby stops scrolling and looks up.

"I don't think it's Spain." He says "I think it's Brazil."

"Why?" Caleb asks.

"Well I'm not completely positive, but when I typed it in there was a suggestion that came up for the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro." Toby starts "It's that big one of the man with his arms open wide. And it's always hot there, isn't it? Hold on." He types rapidly for a few seconds, before beginning to read from his phone.

"It says here that because it's in the Southern Hemisphere, February is the hottest month of the year in Rio. That's this month!" Toby gasps "At its coldest month in July, the average temperature is 21°C or 70°F. So even when it's cold there, it's not even that cold. And...here it says that 'Samba is a lively, rhythmical dance of Brazilian origin'. So there's no doubt that it's Brazil!"

"So V took Piper to Brazil?!" Aria sobs.

"We're gonna get her back." Toby says confidently "And on the plus side, at least she's still in the Americas."

"Yeah, that makes everything better." She scoffs, burying her face into my chest. I try my hardest to keep back the tears, but the second I hear Aria's stifled sobs, they begin to pour freely down my cheeks.

"What are we gonna do?" Aria cries "Even if we know she's in Brazil, that hardly helps. We can't just go there and start walking around looking for her."

"It's a start. V mentioned the Christ the Redeemer statue, which is in Rio de Janeiro." Toby says "It's a big city, but at least we know that's where he took Piper."

"So we just book a flight for Rio and then roam the streets looking for her?" Aria questions.

"I think the first step is just to get to Brazil." He replies. Not a second later, Aria's phone vibrates, signalling a new text message.
